 I also managed to checkpoint successfully, but with a tiny test run on 2
 processes.  So it probably depends on the precise setup that you run with.
 Since the hang happen in the check for grid scalars, it might also depend
 on how many of those you have.  I also experienced an unusual hang with
 IsolatedHorizon with mvapich2 which went away when I switched to
 QuasiLocalMeasures, but this might also have been fixed by going to
 OpenMPI.
