 How about something like the attached patch? It's not commit-ready but it
 works and gives an idea of the approach

 This makes use of an rsync rules file to specify which paths to
 include/exclude/hide/show. It doesn't use --delete-exclude since that can
 be achieved with hide if necessary. As well as making things simpler, it
 solves the pyc problem by excluding with the perishable flag.
