Comment (by hinder):

 Unfortunately it looks like ping is not a reliable diagnostic in 2011.
 Some network administrators think it is a good idea to block ping, even
 though this violates internet standards and makes troubleshooting very
 difficult.  From my laptop:

 I don't know where the ping is being blocked, but that looks to be a
 separate problem.
