 There is a large amount of historical logic in the old extras mechanism
 for locating MPI libraries.  All of this has been lost when converting to
 the new thorn.  This may or may not be a good thing.

 I agree that the configure scripts have gotten out of hand.  We have
 duplicated logic across most of them which should be factored out and
 provided by Cactus at the very least.
