 The logic at the bottom of the zlib configuration script would override
 that.  Now that I see this, I guess that is another bug.  Yes, setting
 these would be a workaround, once the bug is fixed.  I think there was
 some other library where this didn't work (maybe hwloc?), and I was
 getting confused with that.
