Comment (by hinder):

 Given that existing Cactus parameters are referenced as thorn::name, not
 $thorn::name, do we still want to have the requirement of introducing a $
 for the user's variables?  Maybe we should consider this feature as
 experimental, and allow the possibility to make backward-incompatible
 changes until the next release.
