Comment (by knarf):

 Different out_dirs for different processes might have the problem that
 code might assume it needs to, e.g. create a file or directory only on the
 root process to be present on all (after some sync time). On the other
 hand: such code is then likely to only write from the root process anyway
 (but not necessarily).
