Comment (by hinder):

 Yes; I would rather not break backward-compatibility with existing thorns
 if it's not necessary, just for the sake of removing a couple of lines of
 code.  If, on the other hand, retaining the old behaviour makes the code
 much more complicated or is a lot of work, then we should consider it.
