 I think it should be set by detect.sh if the user didn't set it. And I see
 it is actually set there.

 Can you look into the autogenerated HDF5 configuration files in the
 "bindings" directories? Are the settings there correct? What does
 "bindings/Configurations/Thorns/CarpetIOHDF5" pull in?
