 Yes, this violates the docs which state that empty strings (which is what
 is used for a regex that matches anything) need to be given as "" ie the
 quotes are required here (the docs say something like quotes are required
 for empty strings and strings containing space). This was documented since
 2005 (git hash c3e9e0714d45f550b9190d3e204432de41944cb9).
