Something like this however may kind of work, by checking for failure:  

```
$(shell : $(OBJS))
ifeq ($(.SHELLSTATUS),0)
  OBJS-too-long := 0
else
  OBJS-too-long := 1
endif
```

which just tries to execute the `:` \(true\) command.
