I have written some very brief notes on moving to the new version, as Luca requested:
https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Carpet_Transition
Please add to this page anything you have come across.
In preparation for the call, you may also want to take a look at the current Einstein Toolkit testsuite status for both the Git and hg versions of Carpet:
http://www.aei.mpg.de/~ianhin/tests/einsteintoolkit/
(the tests are run nightly but this page is just a snapshot for now). The summary is that all the tests pass with the Git version and 116/126 pass with the hg version. Most things on that page are clickable, leading to more information that helps to diagnose what the problems are, if any.
Erik mentioned that some of the changes in Carpet lead to legitimately different grid structures. This makes regression testing impossible in some cases. For those, we would have to perform correctness testing of the new code and regenerate the test results. The tests would then fail with the Git version of Carpet. I don't know if any of the tests we actually run fall into that category.
Looking at the current Carpet tickets,
https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/query?status=accepted&status=assigned&status=new&status=reopened&status=review&component=Carpet&col=id&col=summary&col=status&col=owner&col=type&col=priority&col=reporter&col=time&col=component&order=priority
there are only 2 defect tickets reporting problems with the hg version of Carpet:
#446 major 1D HDF5 output nonfunctional with multipatch - std::out_of_range https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/446
#419 minor CarpetRegrid2 sets up grids which are not consistent https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/419
If people are having a lot of trouble with the new version, then I would encourage them to submit tickets:
https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/newticket
Make sure to choose "Carpet" as the "component".
