[Users] Postdoc at the University of Canterbury

Hi everyone,

There is a generic two year postdoc position in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Canterbury, NZ, where applicants can apply to work with myself as well as collaborate with David Wiltshire from Physics on projects using the Einstein Toolkit.

Dr. Stevens research is in the field of mathematical and numerical relativity focusing on black holes, gravitational waves, global properties/asymptotic structure and IBVP formulations of the Einstein equations and Friedrich’s conformal field equations. Ongoing projects include global numerical evolutions of asymptotically simple space-times, the numerical calculation of the Newman-Penrose constants, a numerical implementation of Cauchy-characteristic matching, quasinormal mode calculations in modified theories and the scattering problem for gravitational waves.

David Wiltshire has an ongoing collaboration, with a PhD student jointly supervised by Hayley Macpherson (Chicago), to apply Einstein toolkit to cosmological simulations. To date such simulations have been used to explore the self-consistency of the standard model of cosmology. A future project with Chris Stevens aims to explore Einstein toolkit simulations with an initial small level of backreaction from inhomogeneities which are nonetheless consistent with the cosmic microwave background radiation. The focus is to explore alternatives to the FLRW geometry, at a time when the cosmological principle is under increasing pressure from observations such as the quasar dipole.
