Unlike IRC, gitter does not require that users be logged in constantly, and it has been used to great success within the SymPy community: <a href="https://gitter.im/sympy/sympy">https://gitter.im/sympy/sympy</a> . By default, you receive email notifications if someone poses a question directed at you, and notification settings can be adjusted to be noisier or less noisy as desired.
