getting up to speed?
by Eric West 04 Jun '18

04 Jun '18

Hi All, Does anyone have suggestions on how best to get up to speed with the focus items for this working group? I am interested in helping where ever the need is greatest and/or my limited skills can be put to use (disclaimer: I am new to HPC, but eager to learn). My initial inclination is to try to help with benchmarking, but I'm willing to divert my effort elsewhere if that seems more prudent. In the last telecon, Helvi also mentioned the possibility of helping with a grant proposal, which I am open to. Basically, I'm looking for things to do/read in the next two weeks prior to the Einstein Toolkit workshop. Suggestions? Thanks, Eric -- Eric J West Assistant Professor Department of Physics and Astronomy University of Minnesota Duluth

BBH benchmark results
by Erik Schnetter 29 Apr '18

29 Apr '18

I ran benchmarks on Graham for Ian's BBH benchmark parameter files. Since this measures OpenMP performance, I used a single node with 32 cores, varying the number of OpenMP threads. The results are in the repo next to the benchmark parameter files in a CSV file. The result is: With a single OpenMP thread, as expected no difference. For many (16) OpenMP threads, the new code is twice as fast. For intermediate cases, the new code is up to 10x faster. This is clearly because the old code behaves badly. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)gmail.com> http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/personal/eschnetter/

Hi everyone, since we discussed the possibility to use PRACE (Partnership for advanced computing in Europe) for scaling tests and code optimization on European clusters, here is a link to the PRACE Preparatory access calls: http://www.prace-ri.eu/prace-preparatory-access/ If you are interested we can discuss it in the upcoming WG call. cheers, Helvi =========================================== Dr. Helvi Witek Royal Society University Research Fellow Theoretical Particle Physics and Cosmology Department of Physics King's College London ===========================================
