Pull request https://github.com/EinsteinToolkit/ExternalLibraries-HDF5/pull/3 requests at least version 1.8 from pkg-config. No attempt is made to guess the version of libhdf5 if pkg-config is not used. Could be done but tends to be tricky since one must parse H5public.h whose name and existence may not be “official” since only hdf5.h is used by user code.
