 Ah, I had not thought of the MIC and Blue Genes. The trick of compiling
 stdin also works with intel compilers (tried this for different reasons)
 but i have no idea how fast they are or if PGI has similar issues. This
 all only really matters if the thing that makes formaline slow is the
 number of files it creates on disk.
