 I agree that the way things are now can be a bit confusing. MPI_DIR,
 however, is used as directory, to direct the search to a specific
 directory if needed/requested - in case none of the other MPI_ variables
 are set. It is only not looked at (but needs to be set), if one of the
 others is set. In this case you are expected to set everything manually.
