 Affinity isn't "set" or "unset"; it's always set to a particular setting.
 We can introduce an environment variable to tell SystemTopology to do
 nothing; one then has to set it in the run script.

 Is there a reason you want to run without SystemTopology, or you think
 this should be the default? The thorn is there for a reason -- not to be
 fancy, but because it's basically the only way to ensure things run
 efficiently on most systems. Everything else requires very system-specific
 settings that are very fragile.
