 Thanks a lot for the suggestion.

 I confirm that turning off  the 'Apply color using textures' flag in Top-
 menu->Options->Rendering->Advanced solves the problem in my case (see
 https://elist.ornl.gov/pipermail/visit-users/2015-January/016895.html)

 Maybe this should be explicitly mentioned somewhere. In the cactus web
 page there used to be a page with info about visualization
 (http://cactuscode.org/documentation/visualization/VisIt/), but it seems
 to be outdated. Maybe it could go in the ET wiki?
