Comment (by knarf):

 Until we test on all machines we don't know, and we only do this in a
 coordinated fashion before a release. Instead of reverting a lot of
 unrelated changed, we could revert only disabling looking in multi-arch
 directories. This should fix it on the old Ubuntu - the only machine we
 know of where this was reported.

 Also, since the ET does not contain any HDF5 Fortran code, the current
 problem was not "battle" tested anyway. We only have this problem if users
 happen to have HDF5 Fortran code around, and because of that explicitly
 enable it, which by itself is already a diversion from the option lists in
 simfactoy you mention.
