 Thanks for the helpful log. It appears that Ubuntu didn't package the
 necessary .pc package config file in trusty (14.04), but did starting in
 utopic (14.10) and vivid (15.04).

 Utopic is EOL already (Trusty isn't), Vivid is alive, and Wily (15.10) is
 about to release tomorrow. Updating might already resolve the issue. In
 the meantime - would it be feasible to either let it build the bundled
 version, or set specific LIBS/LIB_DIRS/INC_DIRS on Trusty, until you
 update to the one of the current releases?
