Denied the right to be treated as a white person by society and black Americans alike, Roland was first married to a white man, but this was a scandal in such a people as the Quakers and so she was forced to live apart from her husband. When he died, she buried the body in the forest with the aid of other people and then continued alone. With the aid of her brother, whom she had also befriended, she went to Canada. There, she tried to immigrate to the U.S. with the aid of the Canadian government, but she was turned away. Her brother was sent back to the U.S. and charged with being an “undesirable alien.” She was eventually granted permission to leave Canada and make her way to the U.S.
When Harriet Porter arrived in New York City with her two small children, she was taken to a boarding house, and her children were put in the care of her niece, Mary. All three women worked as bakers, and Harriet lived on the earnings of her children. She was also able to sell produce at the markets. Her work was based on the understanding that the women were “assisted by the charity of their dear friends,” and that they were not to speak about their collective experience at the boarding house. Their experience was reported in a Westchester newspaper. The child and woman who travelled with her had been abducted from her family, and her mother had remarried without Harriet’s approval.
In 1811, African American leader Frederick Douglass published the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. In this book, he tells of how he was born into slavery in Maryland in about 1818. He remembers his youth and his subsequent life in bondage. 6a6f617c0c
