In particular, please have a look at ticket #1512
https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/1512 which contains a small
parfile which you can use to test for particular issue in loopcontrol.
The test runs in ~2 minutes or so and you should be able to verify if
you see the slowdown you experienced. A workaround is to set
LoopControl::settle_after_iteration = 0 . The slowdown after recovery
however does not fit this picture.
