European Einstein Toolkit School and Workshop, September 2019, London
by Witek, Helvi 22 Apr '19

22 Apr '19

Dear all, the next European Einstein Toolkit Workshop and School will take place from 2 - 6 September 2019 at King’s College London, UK. The meeting will offer a school on the first two days introducing new users on how to install and run the Einstein Toolkit, and useful post-processing and visualizations tools. We furthermore provide a platform for ample discussion within the Einstein Toolkit community and with our friends in the broader numerical relativity community. In the second half of the week, the workshop will highlight exciting science cases and the latest developments in numerical relativity. The registration is now open on our website: https://sites.google.com/view/eetm2019/home The registration and abstract submission deadline is on 31 July 2019. There is no registration fee. Note, that we currently cannot offer any travel support. If you wish to give a talk, please submit a title+abstract together with your registration. Postdoc cosmology positions - N.Copernicus University - deadline 22 Feb 2019
by Boud Roukema 22 Jan '19

22 Jan '19

hi Cosmoparticle WG, There may be some young scientists doing numerical cosmological relativity (standard GR, beyond FLRW) who are not yet aware of our short-term postdoc positions that are waiting to be filled. Some key formal and informal info about the positions is the following. Contact: castle fizyka.umk.pl Deadline: 2019-02-22 Location: Torun, Poland The Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Informatics of the Nicolaus Copernicus University invites applications for 12- to 24-month postdoctoral positions (adiunkt naukowy) in theoretical/observational inhomogeneous cosmology. A substantial fraction of the successful candidates’ research work will be expected to focus on the possible links between inhomogeneous cosmology and dark matter, but they will also be expected to develop their own original cosmology research programs. Formal advertisement and how to apply: https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/368908 Informal enquiries: boud astro.uni.torun.pl Cheers Boud

ET "Cosmology and particles" working group call
by Witek, Helvi 03 Dec '18

03 Dec '18

Dear all, please consider joining our last "Cosmology and Particles" working group call of the year next Monday, 3rd December 2018. In the last call we decided to move time of the call to 2:15pm (GMT) / 3:15pm (CET). You can attend the meeting via the google hangout: https://hangouts.google.com/hangouts/_/tce4j4gzcfcormnadoauiqcvg4e The next call will be a bit experimental: some of us will be at the GRChombo meeting in Oxford, where I will give a talk on my latest results of simulating black hole binaries in scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We would broadcast my talk (and invite you to pose questions) via the google hangout. Best wishes, Helvi =========================================== Dr. Helvi Witek Royal Society University Research Fellow Theoretical Particle Physics and Cosmology Department of Physics King's College London ===========================================

picture for ETK workshop report
by helvi witek 15 Jun '18

15 Jun '18

Dear all, next week there will be the Einstein Toolkit workshop in Georgia Tech, and I will give a brief report about our working group. I would like to show who is involved in our group in my last slide. If you are OK with me showing a picture of you it would be great if you could send me a photo until Sunday evening (UK). We will have our next working group call on Monday, 25th June 2018. We do not yet have a designated speaker for the call, so this is your chance to propose and lead a discussion. I am looking forward to your suggestions. Hi everyone Thanks for the comments. I will indeed just be giving a brief overview of GRChombo, but I’d be very happy to provoke a discussion of what people feel are the key requirements/recommendations for public codes. GRChombo is still relatively new and certainly has a lot to learn from an established code like the ET. Looking forward to the discussion! On a practical level, I find the most important things for reproducible computational science are: - use a version control system - produce all simulations for a paper with one particular, documented version of the code - store all parameter/input files in the paper repository And most of all: - have a working tutorial with simple examples that helps people get started with the code I'm not expecting a tutorial from Katy (I'm expecting an overview), but if you want to build a community, you might want to think about offering such a tutorial, e.g. via videoconferencing, once you have a few interested people. -erik On Mon, Apr 16, 2018 at 4:46 PM, Boud Roukema <boud(a)astro.uni.torun.pl<mailto:boud@astro.uni.torun.pl>> wrote: hi Helvi, all, On Mon, 16 Apr 2018, helvi witek wrote: Katy Clough kindly agreed to give us an introduction to GRChombo ( http://www.grchombo.org/), their new, publicly available numerical relativity code. GRChombo is *not* just publicly available; it is free software in the formal sense of "free software" (i.e. free-licensed software - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/free_software), under the BSD 3-clause licence: https://github.com/GRChombo/GRChombo/blob/master/LICENSE For a code to be publicly available is not very useful in itself, since that includes non-free codes, for which it is illegal to modify the code, redistribute it, and/or redistribute modified versions. What is critical for a scientific community like ours is to be able to correct bugs in the code, add features, have other people correct bugs in turn, and freely redistribute corrected versions, while giving proper credit to who did what and including proper revision/history control. For software to be publicly available is insufficient to support this community process; in contrast, being free-licensed software - such as GRChombo - guarantees the right to free development by the community.
