Thanks !

Everyone, I had a great time digging deeper into the toolkit this week with you all. It was good to hang out with physicists and consider science problems for a change. Thanks, in particular to the NCSA team and Roland Haas for the hospitality and a well thought-through program. The toolkit you guys have built is very impressive and well in line with commercial software I am using in my work. If, for some reason, the science dries up there are plenty of opportunities for all of you in the commercial industry. I wish I could be more involved with real work on the science but as my time is very limited I have to settle for the next best thing. I will be doing more of the janitorial work and help with the new user experience/documentation and perhaps also be able to debug some of the examples that do not work for some reason or other. I 'see' you online! Mikael Sahrling

DataVault — Einstein Toolkit Data Repository Pre-design Survey
by Qian Zhang 04 Aug '17

04 Aug '17

Dear Einstein Toolkit (ET) users, As part of an NSF software award, we are planning to build an open, community data repository for the Einstein Toolkit (ET). A core driver for this repository is to facilitate data retention and sharing. Datasets produced by the Einstein Toolkit will be archived in an open repository where they can be connected to publications via a DOI, and searched for via metadata. We would welcome hearing your thoughts on how to share and sustain the datasets produced by the ET. You are invited to participate in this research project because you are the user of the Einstein Toolkit and associated data. Your participation in this research study is *voluntary*. You may choose not to participate. If you decide to participate in this research survey <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdLrcXVJXKZBv3PAIaXtgj6YMylPVxwx-c…> (and a follow-up survey), you may withdraw at any time. If you decide not to participate in this study or if you withdraw from participating at any time, you will not be penalized. The procedure involves filling an online survey that will take approximately 20 minutes. Your responses will be *confidential* and we do not collect identifying information such as your name, email address or IP address. The survey (and a follow-up survey) questions will be about how you managed your simulation data regularly and related experience with using other data repositories. We will do our best to keep your information confidential. All data is stored in an electronic format. To help protect your confidentiality, the surveys will not contain information that will personally identify you. The results of this study will be used for scholarly purposes only and may be shared with related project personnels. If you have any questions about the research study, please contact Gabrielle Allen (gdallen(a)illinois.edu), Roland Hass (rhaas(a)illinois.edu) or Qian Zhang (zqian1(a)illinois.edu). This research has been reviewed according to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign IRB procedures for research involving human subjects. If you have any questions about your rights as a participant in this study or any concerns or complaints, please contact the University of Illinois Office for the Protection of Research Subjects at 217-333-2670 <(217)%20333-2670> or via email at irb(a)illinois.edu. The *link* to the survey is *here* <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdLrcXVJXKZBv3PAIaXtgj6YMylPVxwx-c…> (the same link as above). Please complete the survey by the end of *next Sunday, August 13*. Thank you very much! Qian

traXXX acounts on loging nodes
by Roland Haas 04 Aug '17

04 Aug '17

Hello all, I very happy to see that the training accounts are still being used for experiments (they are good until about August 15th and you are welcome to use them until then), Unfortunately I have also received emails about too high CPU load and some of you may have seen their processed "killed" by the OS. This happens because I had forgotten to include export OMP_NUM_THREADS=1 ./exe/cactus_etk_workshop par/static_tov.par without the OMP_NUM_THREADS the process tries to start 64 threads which is as many as there are cores which can cause it to stall. Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. I therefore support encrypting and signing email messages. Get my PGP key from http://keys.gnupg.net.

software requirements
by Roland Haas 24 Jul '17

24 Jul '17

Hello all, for the North American Einstein Toolkit School and Workshop you will need some software installed to be able to get started right away. This page https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/NCSAETK2017/setup#Handouts contains information on what software to install. You should at least install a web browser that supports javascript, VisIt and an ssh client. Other software is optional but can be very useful to have. You should not require a powerful laptop as most work will be done using remote machines. We will have a 1 hour computer setup sessionbefore the school on Monday July 31 from 8am - 9am and will eg have USB sticks with the required software ready. Setting things up in advance will avoid stressful first days when you are trying to handle both the lectures and fixing your laptop. Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. I therefore support encrypting and signing email messages. Get my PGP key from http://pgp.mit.edu .

Stack Exchange Site Creation
by Grayson Carroll 08 Apr '12

08 Apr '12

Hey everyone, I remember a few people talking about stackexchange website for us to more effectively manage getting questions answered. If anyone else hasn't already started the process of making one, I would be willing to create it and pass all of the credentials to the maintainers. I've had a lot of great experience with stack overflow, and I think it will allow many of the toolkit's more difficult and obscure nuances to be much more well documented. Very useful for newcomers, and it's pretty intuitive. Thanks again for putting on a great workshop. Grayson Carroll

Hi all, Bruno added a link to a single puncture par file to the workshop site which is small enough to run within the VM. He'll go over it tomorrow morning, but go ahead and try it out! https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/images/6/69/Onepuncture.par Cheers, Tanja As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. --JFK

VM Memory/Size
by Dennis Castleberry 05 Apr '12

05 Apr '12

Dear group, When conducting simulations or visualizations which require a great amount of disk space, you'll want to ensure that your disk space and memory are well-managed. You may wish to issue in another terminal the command: watch "df -h; echo; free -m" to monitor both disk space and memory periodically. If your disk becomes full, the OS will be unable to create files. This will prevent you from logging in, as file creation is necessary for login. This is reparable without starting from scratch (see me if it happens), but the best practice is to monitor the usage. Note that if you enable shared folders, you may save simulation and visualization data outside the disk image. Regards, Dennis Castleberry dcastl2(a)tigers.lsu.edu

Virtualbox installation
by Frank Loeffler 03 Apr '12

03 Apr '12

Hello everybody During the Einstein Toolkit workshop next week we will use VirtualBox to run a virtual machine on participant laptops. It would be beneficial (although it is not necessary) to install VirtualBox before you come to the workshop. You can find information about how to do that here: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads You do not need to create any virtual machine yet. Just download and install the VirtualBox software itself, and if you like get familiar with it. We will provide a disk image, instructions and help at the workshop. Frank Loeffler

Room share desired 3.-6. April
by Alex Vañó Viñuales 22 Mar '12

22 Mar '12

Hi all, first of all I apologize for using the mailing list for this purpose, but I really need a quick answer regarding this issue. For those who are attending the Spring Einstein Toolkit Workshop 2012 ( https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/ET_Workshop_Spring_2012) and have not arranged their lodgings yet: I am looking for someone to share the room with. Given that the special rate at the Hampton Inn Atlanta finished on Tuesday, I propose to share a room in the Hotel Midtown Atlanta for the days 3.-6. April. (In reality I arrive on the 31. March, but don't think that anybody will be there that early). In case somebody was interested, please send me an email as soon as possible and in any case not later than tomorrow Friday 23. March at 10:00 EDT (-0400). Thank you, Alex Vano-Vinuales -- -------------------------------------------------- Alex Vano Vinuales Departament de Fisica Edifici Mateu Orfila i Rotger Universitat de les Illes Balears Cra. de Valldemossa km. 7.5 07122 Palma de Mallorca Illes Balears, Spain Phone: +34-971-17-2536 --------------------------------------------------
