#2969: ExternalLibraries-PETSc: Link hwloc into the configure-time MPI check for from-source MPI Reporter: Max Morris Status: open Milestone: Version: Type: bug Priority: major Component: Comment (by Max Morris): I just succeeded in building Cactus by moving the fix out of the PETSc thorn and into the MPI thorn. Here is my new PR: https://github.com/EinsteinToolkit/ExternalLibraries-MPI/pull/3 -- Ticket URL: https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2969/externallibraries…

#2969: ExternalLibraries-PETSc: Link hwloc into the configure-time MPI check for from-source MPI Reporter: Max Morris Status: open Milestone: Version: Type: bug Priority: major Component: Comment (by Max Morris): When building HDF5 via the ExternalThorn, only serial HDF5 is built, so the issue is sidestepped. See src/build.sh:77 in ExternalThorn-MPI, there is no --enable-parallel flag when calling `./configure` and I don't see any way for that flag to arrive there. The only instance where parallel HDF5 is linked against MPI is during the final Cactus linkage (ExternalThorn-MPI's src/detect.sh:269 checks for parallel HDF5 and adds MPI libdirs to its own), by which point hwloc is present on the link line anyway as I mentioned previously. If ExternalThorn-HDF5 were to build with --enable-parallel then I suspect it would suffer from the same issue as PETSc. I still think you are right that the fix ought to live in the MPI thorn. I am currently building Cactus with such a fix to make sure it works before submitting a new PR. -- Ticket URL: https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2969/externallibraries…

#2969: ExternalLibraries-PETSc: Link hwloc into the configure-time MPI check for from-source MPI Reporter: Max Morris Status: open Milestone: Version: Type: bug Priority: major Component: Comment (by Roland Haas): HDF5 builds a couple of utility programs that link against HDF5 (and this MPI if parallel HDF5 is used). So it should run into this same problem (and possibly uses the same sort of ad-hoc solution). -- Ticket URL: https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2969/externallibraries…

#2969: ExternalLibraries-PETSc: Link hwloc into the configure-time MPI check for from-source MPI Reporter: Max Morris Status: open Milestone: Version: Type: bug Priority: major Component: Comment (by Max Morris): During the build of PETSc, its configure.py builds and links a tiny MPI program. That particular build is what lacks the hwloc library paths, and therefore what causes the overall build to fail. None of the other thorns do this; they only get linked against MPI at the end of the overall Cactus build, by which time hwloc is present on the link line. I think you are essentially right that it would be better to add the HWLOC_LIBS and HWLOC_LIB_DIRS in the MPI thorn, but presently this is the only ExternalThorn affected by this issue. Fixing it in the MPI thorn would catch any future dependencies that happen to do the same thing. Let me know if you would like me to make another ticket with such a fix. If that one is merged, this ticket should be discarded. -- Ticket URL: https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2969/externallibraries…

#2969: ExternalLibraries-PETSc: Link hwloc into the configure-time MPI check for from-source MPI Reporter: Max Morris Status: open Milestone: Version: Type: bug Priority: major Component: Comment (by Roland Haas): might be better to add the hwloc libs etc to MPI_LIBS in the MPI thorn so that all MPI clients benefit from them (not just PETSc). Do you have any idea why only PETSSc seems to be affected by this (and no eg hdf5)? -- Ticket URL: https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2969/externallibraries…

#2969: ExternalLibraries-PETSc: Link hwloc into the configure-time MPI check for from-source MPI Reporter: Max Morris Status: submitted Milestone: Version: Type: bug Priority: major Component: This fixes an issue which prevents the ET from building when both OpenMPI and PETSc are built from source via ExternalLibraries.
