As far as I am concerned, changes to machine files are among the first candidates that should get a backport. Machines/distributions are prone to change, and I don't see why we shouldn't react to this. Roland: please backport what you see as necessary and safe/tested.
Concerning a new release tag: I would wait with that a little longer. The tags aren't really supposed to be used by anyone for a checkout anyway, and waiting a little to accumulate more changes shouldn't hurt.

These were apparently discussed in the ET call from Jan 9th 2017. The notes http://lists.einsteintoolkit.org/pipermail/users/2017-January/005175.html seem to indicate this and the ticket is mentioned.
