#2537: sim setup-silent produces float values for ppn in machine.ini file
Reporter: Roland Haas
Status: new
Milestone:
Version: development version
Type: bug
Priority: critical
Component: SimFactory
Running `sim setup-silent` on a freshly updates macOS BigSur x86 VM I get:
```
% ./simfactory/bin/sim whoami
Error: value for key ppn in section osx-homebrew is not of required type int
Aborting Simfactory.
```
On that system python3 happens to be Python 3.8.2.
This can be fixed by:
```diff
diff --git a/lib/simdt.py b/lib/simdt.py
index 6b51053f..c1a63cea 100644
--- a/lib/simdt.py
Milestone:
Version: development version
Type: bug
Priority: major
Component: Cactus website
Comment (by Roland Haas):
Right now with https the certificates do not match eg one gets:
```
$ curl -I --resolve cactuscode.org:443:185.199.108.153 https://cactuscode.org/
curl: (60) SSL: no alternative certificate subject name matches target host name 'cactuscode.org'
```
while with www \(for which a CNAME entry exists\) it works fine:
```
curl -I --resolve www.cactuscode.org:443:185.199.108.153https://www.cactuscode.org/

Comment (by Roland Haas):
Indeed if we had a DNS A entry from [cactuscode.org](http://cactuscode.org) to [einsteintoolkit.github.io](http://einsteintoolkit.github.io) then both [https://cactuscode.org](https://cactuscode.org) and [https://www.cactuscode.org](https://www.cactuscode.org) should result in the same website being delivered. GitHub is not fully clear on this on [https://docs.github.com/en/pages/configuring-a-custom-domain-for-your-githu… where they state
> For example, if you configure `www.example.com` as the custom domain for your site, and you have GitHub Pages DNS records set up for the apex and `www` domains, then `example.com` will redirect to `www.example.com`. Note that automatic redirects only apply to the `www` subdomain. Automatic redirects do not apply to any other subdomains, such as `blog`

Comment (by Roland Haas):
I have seen GItHub dropping connections when too many concurrent connections existed. Eg this happened on our tutorial server when a whole class of students tried to download at the same time. Possibly a similar situation exists for you.
You may see success by using `--no-parallel` instead of `--parallel` \(simply removing the option may not be enough\).

Steve
If you access the web site from within LSU, then maybe your DNS or DHCP setup might mark “[lsu.edu](http://lsu.edu)” as trusted? Are you accessing it from outside LSU, and without VPN?
