Yes, brevity is the reason for not using CCTK_INDEX. This would require {{{ CCTK_GFINDEX3D(cctkGH, CCTK_INDEX[0], CCTK_INDEX[1], CCTK_INDEX[2]) }}} or (in Fortran) {{{ gxx(CCTK_INDEX(1), CCTK_INDEX(2), CCTK_INDEX(3)) }}} which may lead people to not use these macros (or make them add their own boilerplate to introduce shorter names).
