A significantly different mechanism to handle has been implemented, by Erik, in LSUThorns/PeriodicCarpet. This thorn should be added to the Einstein Toolkit, and slowly replace Periodic.
Before introducing this thorn to the ET, we need at least one testcase with AMR.
