Hi, Jeff Winicour, Maria Babiuc-Hamilton, Bela Szilagyi, and I are working on an arrangement for Cauchy-Characteristic extraction. We were thinking of releasing it as an open source tool under the Einstein toolkit and were wondering about the procedure for getting the code included and suggestions for licenses (we would like to request that users of the code cite appropriate references). This arrangement, in conjunction with existing ET software, would include all the needed tools to perform CCE. -- Dr. Yosef Zlochower Center for Computational Relativity and Gravitation Assistant Professor School of Mathematical Sciences Rochester Institute of Technology 85 Lomb Memorial Drive Rochester, NY 14623 Office:74-2067 Phone: +1 585-475-6103 yosef(a)astro.rit.edu CONFIDENTIALITY NOTE: The information transmitted, including attachments, is intended only for the person(s) or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or privileged material. error: thorn HDF5
by Babiuc-Hamilton, Maria 31 Jan '11

31 Jan '11

Hello, I am trying to compile einsteintoolkit on a new cluster (http://www.marshall.edu/cyberinfrastructure/?page_id=5) and I have this error: CST error 1: -> Thorn 'HDF5' requires the capability 'zlib'. Please add a thorn that provides 'zlib' to your ThornList or remove 'HDF5' from it ! Please let me know how can be fixed. Also, when I using GetComponents I have a warning about "no darcs in..." thank you, Maria

Meeting minutes: Present were: Frank, Roland, Peter, Josh, Tanja, Ian, Eloisa, Bruno, Erik, Yosef ET paper: * some commits were done during the week and weekend * please check if you are assigned to a section and expect to be bugged by Frank if things are still missing by the middle of the week New thorns: * do not include the Web 2.0 thorns into the ET thorn list but do include them into a (future) master thorn list * include SystemStatistics thorn * HDF5 now depends on a new thorn ZLIB which find libz Thornlists: * have two thornlists, a Einstein Toolkit (smaller list) one and a master one (everything) ET workshop: * we agree that workshop for ET beginners (but experienced grad students/postdocs), about issues with simulations, ideas on how to improve the toolkit is a good idea * have to decide where/when to hold it * check if we can get some funding from NSF * will come up with ideas for contents/location/participants during the week and discuss in the next meeting Visualization: * collect current practices of the groups in wiki https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Visualization_of_simulation_results * visualization was part of the original proposal so we will have to think about it * include a simfactory "get" command to copy user specified data from a cluster Multipole: * please have a look at Erik's proposed patch New thorn submission policy (recap): * post intention on user mailing list and ask for discussion * if there is no discussion we will discuss the proposed thorn in the next meeting * we prefer full documentation and test suites but if the thorn was used in a publication we are willing to accept this as a "quality" measure instead Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. Cheap&Dirty Visualization practices
by Frank Loeffler 31 Jan '11

31 Jan '11

Hi As discussed at todays phone call, everyone interested is asked to provide a really short summary of what they do for cheap&dirty type of visualizations, e.g. to monitor simulations. I created a wiki page on the ET wiki (I know, the ssl certificate is _still_ broken): https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Visualization_of_simulation_results Please add yourself and describe shortly your usual workflow. Meeting Reminder
by Frank Loeffler 31 Jan '11

31 Jan '11

Hi, This is a reminder about our usual Monday Einstein Toolkit phone call. As usual, you can find instructions how to join on the following web site: http://einsteintoolkit.org/info/support/ There will be a (short) summary about what changed on the ET paper (because not much actually happened). Some changes within external libraries will be announced (again). A number of thorns has been suggested to be included in the ET, and we will discuss which of them should make it in. These are: Web 2.0 technologies for accessing and announcing Cactus simulation results: ExternalLibraries/curl ExternalLibraries/flickcurl ExternalLibraries/libxml2 LSUThorns/Flickr LSUThorns/Twitter Interesting run-time statistics: AEIThorns/SystemStatistics Useful external libraries: ExternalLibraries/CGNS ExternalLibraries/HYPRE Frank Loeffler

Re: [Users] [Einstein Toolkit] #241: Thorns should be able to specify implementation versions, and other thorns should be able to depend on those

There might be, for using this with different branches of the same thing (think of Carpet). An integer would be cumbersome there, a decimal should do however. Frank

New thorns for standard thorn list
by Erik Schnetter 26 Jan '11

26 Jan '11

I suggest to add the following thorns to our standard Einstein Toolkit thorn list: Web 2.0 technologies for accessing and announcing Cactus simulation results: ExternalLibraries/curl ExternalLibraries/flickcurl ExternalLibraries/libxml2 LSUThorns/Flickr LSUThorns/Twitter Interesting run-time statistics: AEIThorns/SystemStatistics Useful external libraries: ExternalLibraries/CGNS ExternalLibraries/HYPRE Not all these libraries work / can be built on all HPC systems, although they all work on standard Linux systems with gcc or Intel compilers. The simulation factory has an mdb entry "disabled-thorns" that describes which thorns need to be disabled on what system. (These entries are probably not up to date in the Perl version of Simfactory.) -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/

Using zlib in HDF5 and libxml2
by Erik Schnetter 26 Jan '11

26 Jan '11

Thorns HDF5 and libxml2 require the zlib library. This library is currently configured ad-hoc. I just committed a new thorn ExternalLibraries/zlib that can either configure the zlib library, or that can build it if the system does not provide a usable one. I suggest to make thorns HDF5 and libxml2 require the zlib thorn. (libxml2 is among the thorns I suggested earlier to include in the standard Einstein Toolkit thorn list.) People will then have to update their thorn list to include the zlib thorn, and will have to configure their zlib location explicitly via this thorn. If this thorn is not included, then thorn HDF5 and libxml2 will fail to build. By default (if it is not explicitly configured), the zlib thorn will look for the zlib library in the "usual" places. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~eschnett/

Hi, Please let your editors break the lines at something like 80 characters. Writing one paragraph as one long line makes diffs, and thus the use of svn, much more difficult due to more conflicts. thanks, Frank

Meeting minutes: Present were: Frank, Roland, Tanja, Ian, Erik, Yosef, Josh, Bruno ET paper: * reminder to start working on it, we want to see some progress on it this week * Josh: MHD+Initial Data sections are in the draft stage (currently 1-1.5 pages). Needs to be fleshed out a bit for completeness then cut down to size again. * Ian will ask about a Living Reviews paper this week * will meet in Evo weekly ET meeting to coordinate todays work, hope to get lots of commits by 11:00 (central time) * Bruno will run the Kerr-Schild test(s) and write a small (0.5 page, one plot) section about it Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail.
