Probable speedup of simulations - Ram File system
by David N. Bradley 24 Dec '12

24 Dec '12

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 After compiling the cactus and ET, I ran the static_tov simulation in a ram file system. It seems to run faster, since it did not have to spin up the harddrive for each iteration and append the data. Has anyone tried a similar method. I used rsync to copy the result back to my home/david/simulations tree. It may save wear and tear on the hardware. Just watch out for power failures. simfactory build verbose
by Steven R. Brandt 20 Dec '12

20 Dec '12

I had been under the impression that --verbose would trigger a build with VERBOSE=yes from simfactory, but I gather that the thing that --verbose makes verbose is simfactory itself, and not the build process. Would it be good if make became verbose as well? Here is a crude hack that does it. Until then, I use this: Index: simfactory/lib/sim-build.py =================================================================== --- simfactory/lib/sim-build.py (revision 1866) +++ simfactory/lib/sim-build.py (working copy) @@ -324,9 +324,13 @@ DefineDatabase.Set('EMAIL', email) make = DefineDatabase.SubAll(machineEntry.GetKey('make')) + + opts = "" + if simenv.VERBOSE: + opts = "VERBOSE=yes" display("Building %s" % configName) - ret = simlib.ExecuteCommand("cd %s && %s %s 2>&1" % (simenv.CACTUS_PATH, make, configName)) + ret = simlib.ExecuteCommand("cd %s && %s %s %s 2>&1" % (simenv.CACTUS_PATH, make, configName, opts)) if ret != 0: sys.exit(1)

meeting minutes
by Roland Haas 17 Dec '12

17 Dec '12

Present were: Tanja, Frank, Peter, Josh, Seth Hopper, Bruno workshops: * For details see last week's meeting minutes and soon the wiki page https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/ET_Workshop_Summer_2013 * will have 1 day intensive program on Friday (from past experience; we want to offer an early bird setup session the day before or before the workshop starts, we do not want to loose time on this.) * preliminary program: - allow participants to install and compile ET - simple run eg NS collapse (if possible to make robust) or similar run - consider providing output data as well * volunteers for topics: - Frank: overview of Cactus - Tanja: wave analysis - Roland: visualization - everyone: help setting up/compiling/running memory leak reported by Ian Hinder: * http://lists.einsteintoolkit.org/pipermail/users/2012-December/002686.html * Seth (who was also involved) reports that the leaks are quite severe * happen on two different clusters (both with trunk version) * leaks show consistent linear increase (ie no jumpyness) * noticed about ~1wk ago * this happens for pure BBH runs generic options lists: * want to provide option lists for common OS * turns out we already do: - Frank uses and maintains debian.cfg - Steve uses and maintains fedora.cfg - Ian and Barry use OSX: do you want to officially claim to config file? - Bruno uses and will maintain ubuntu.cfg Developer's workshop: * attached to new users workshop: July 27th-29th (incl). Please register interest on the wiki page. Sample parameter files: * provide gallery of runs with parameter files and results * run these runs before the release Yours, Roland

Hi Please consider joining the weekly Einstein Toolkit phone call at 10 am US central time on Mondays. As usual, you can find instructions how to join on the following web site: http://einsteintoolkit.org/community/support/ In short: the number is (+1) 225-578-4942 or (+1) 866-573-0359 and the conference id is 118682#. The topics to discuss include the new users tutorial and developers workshop for next year which will be end of July (see last meeting minutes) at Caltech. Also the memory leaks that Ian reported (http://lists.einsteintoolkit.org/pipermail/users/2012-December/002686.html) and whether we want to provide "generic" option lists for common OSs in simfactory. building on MIC
by Steven R. Brandt 14 Dec '12

14 Dec '12

I'm trying to build on MIC. In order to do that, I have to cross compile. See attached cfg file. Anyhow, I build with simfactory and get this: End of options from '/home1/00044/tg457049/Cactus/configs/sim/OptionList'. creating cache ./config.cache checking host system type... x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes checking whether the C compiler (mpicc -g3 -m128bit-long-double -mmic -rdynamic -Wunused-variable ) works... yes checking whether the C compiler (mpicc -g3 -m128bit-long-double -mmic -rdynamic -Wunused-variable ) is a cross-compiler... yes checking whether we are using GNU C... yes checking whether the C++ compiler (mpicxx -g3 -m128bit-long-double -mmic -std=c++03 -rdynamic -Wunused-variable ) works... yes checking whether the C++ compiler (mpicxx -g3 -m128bit-long-double -mmic -std=c++03 -rdynamic -Wunused-variable ) is a cross-compiler... yes checking whether we are using GNU C++... yes So I expect the mpicc compiler to be used. It isn't. What am I doing wrong? Cheers, Steve

Issues getting Einstein Toolkit built on Scientific Linux 6
by Joe Hellmers 14 Dec '12

14 Dec '12

I'm brand new to the Einstein Toolkit and to Cactus, so be gentle with me. I'm getting some messages similar to "CST error 1: -> Configuration script for thorn BLAS returned exit code 1 Error message: 'Building BLAS requires a Fortran compiler, but there is none configured: F77='none'. Aborting. I looked to the sl6.cfg file and both F77 and F90 are set to gfortran, and gfortran is installed Thanks. Is there another configuration file somewhere that needs to be updated? Joe

Memory leaks
by Ian Hinder 14 Dec '12

14 Dec '12

Hi, We are seeing what we think are severe memory leaks with our BBH simulations using the current trunk. Memory usage goes up linearly during the run, then drops to its original value after recovery. Does anyone else see this? -- Ian Hinder http://numrel.aei.mpg.de/people/hinder
