meeting minutes for 2015-08-31
by Roland Haas 11 Apr '16

11 Apr '16

Present: Frank, Roland, Steve, Peter, Matt, Josh, Erik, Zach, Jonah, Elo There will be no ET call next week due to labour day/Thanksgiving weekend in North America. IllnoisGRMHD: * report is with Zach, was send via private email * separate repo is fine, Zach will create a repository * volunteer needed for the compatibility thorn * Zach will move compatibility thorns into same repo as IllinoisGRMHD GetComponents on OSX: * no OSX user has written * Roland will propose a patch simfactory on BeeGFS: * Erik will look into Bruno's proposed patch writing timeseries data into hdf5: * Frank would like to use this for things like the Hamiltonian norm * HDF5 supports extensible datasets, an example on how to use this is the HDF5 output of Multipole SPH in Cactus: * Matt has a more or less working version of SPH on grid background * came out of work at a national lab on generic grid methods * currently linked in a shared objects for mesh handling and nearest neighbour finding * currently writing his thesis, so code is not changing much right now * load balancing through bisection initially then times the RHS and neighbour looked up push particles around * no octree, instead a hierarchical hash * particle to grid data currently uses SPH approximation for Tmunu at gridpoints of Cactus grid * will arrange for time for presentation through mailing list Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. I therefore support encrypting and signing email messages. Get my PGP key from http://keys.gnupg.net.

SPH in EinsteinToolkit
by Stefan Ruehe 26 Nov '15

26 Nov '15

Good morning, I have made some thoughts about the problems with SPH and MPI. I found a paper by Valdez-Balderas et al (2012) (http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2012arXiv1210.1017V), which could help to solve some of the problems. They suggest a particle halo on each processor unit, in which the neighbour particle of the adjacent processors are saved. This should be synchronized in each timestep. One problem of this method is SPH have to use fixed smoothlength, otherwise the volume of the halo can't be set. The variability of the smoothlength is required to have an adaptive refinement in the SPH-algorithm. I would suggest to use semi-fixed smoothlength, which are smaller in higher refindement levels. This could reduce the disadvantages of the fixed smoothlength. What is your opinion this? Now I try to test how good SPH-approximations for the hydrodynamic grid variables in the Tmunu base are under the condition of such "adaptive-fixed" smoothlength. I have an other method in mind, but this would need more temporary memory. Best regards, Stefan Ruehe

Carpet source code reformatted
by Erik Schnetter 23 Nov '15

23 Nov '15

I formatted Carpet's source code with clang-format. If you are maintaining a branch or patches, then you should reformat them as well to minimize conflicts. I am very interested in hearing whether this causes any problems. -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)gmail.com> http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/personal/eschnetter/

Hydro_InitExcision par directory has more than just parameter files
by Bernard Kelly 20 Nov '15

20 Nov '15

Hi. I noticed that the thorn EinsteinInitialData/Hydro_InitExcision has a "par" subdirectory containing both parfiles *and* the resulting output directories; it looks just like a second set of test suites, except presumably they'd never be picked up by the testsuite process. Any reason why these are there (still true with new 2015_11 release)? Thanks, Bernard

Einstein Toolkit School and Workshop (June 2016, Trento, Italy)
by Bruno Giacomazzo 16 Nov '15

16 Nov '15

Dear Colleagues, we would like to announce an Einstein Toolkit (ET) School and Workshop taking place at the University of Trento in Italy, from June 13th to 17th (2016). We have attached a pdf with some preliminary information about the program. After the successful workshop we had in Stockholm last summer, we decided to continue with the idea of hosting in Europe a meeting of Einstein Toolkit users and developers once per year. This time we will have a three-day long school, useful for new users and people that are interested in learning more about the toolkit. The school will then be followed by a two-day workshop opened not only to ET developers, but also to anyone interested in numerical relativity and computational astrophysics. We hope you will attend this meeting and circulate this information among your collaborators and students. In the following weeks we will also setup a web page and provide more information. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any question. Eloisa Bentivegna (University of Catania, Italy) Riccardo Ciolfi (University of Trento, Italy) Bruno Giacomazzo (University of Trento, Italy) Frank Loeffler (Louisiana State University, USA)
