meeting minutes for 2015-08-31
by Roland Haas 11 Apr '16

11 Apr '16

Present: Frank, Roland, Steve, Peter, Matt, Josh, Erik, Zach, Jonah, Elo There will be no ET call next week due to labour day/Thanksgiving weekend in North America. IllnoisGRMHD: * report is with Zach, was send via private email * separate repo is fine, Zach will create a repository * volunteer needed for the compatibility thorn * Zach will move compatibility thorns into same repo as IllinoisGRMHD GetComponents on OSX: * no OSX user has written * Roland will propose a patch simfactory on BeeGFS: * Erik will look into Bruno's proposed patch writing timeseries data into hdf5: * Frank would like to use this for things like the Hamiltonian norm * HDF5 supports extensible datasets, an example on how to use this is the HDF5 output of Multipole SPH in Cactus: * Matt has a more or less working version of SPH on grid background * came out of work at a national lab on generic grid methods * currently linked in a shared objects for mesh handling and nearest neighbour finding * currently writing his thesis, so code is not changing much right now * load balancing through bisection initially then times the RHS and neighbour looked up push particles around * no octree, instead a hierarchical hash * particle to grid data currently uses SPH approximation for Tmunu at gridpoints of Cactus grid * will arrange for time for presentation through mailing list Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. I therefore support encrypting and signing email messages. Get my PGP key from http://keys.gnupg.net.

Poll for possible change in time for weekly call
by Frank Loeffler 25 Jan '16

25 Jan '16

Hi, Some of the participants do have conflicts with the time for the regular Einstein Toolkit call on Mondays, 10am US central time. Therefore, I would like to ask which other potential times could be used instead, and created a Doodle poll: http://doodle.com/poll/kbzwe3nsb35zzakh The results of this poll will be used to decide about a possible change in time, with the old time getting priority in case of ties (or close ties). Note that the poll has been created time-zone enabled. Assuming your doodle-setup is correct (uses your time-zone), you should be able to select local times. Frank

Weekly Meeting Venue
by Frank Loeffler 12 Jan '16

12 Jan '16

Hi, Due to today's and past problem with the phone line, we wondered if another venue for the weekly call would provide better quality, while still being a stable solution. Google Hangouts in particular were mentioned. The most severe limitation that came up in today's discussion (in such a hangout) was the limit to 10 participants. We rarely, but sometimes, exceed that. Another potential down-side is that you might have to use (and thus, have) an account with Google. Before we try switching to a Google Hangout as regular venue for the call, we would like to ask the community: - Would this be a prevent *you* from calling in? If so, why? - Are there any other potential down-sides we might not have thought of? - Are there better alternatives? Frank Loeffler

Reading multiple CarpetIHDF5 files into VisIt
by Bernard Kelly 11 Jan '16

11 Jan '16

Hi all. Follow-up to my question last week about *outputting* CarpetIOHDF5 3D data as files separated by time (iteration), rather than processor. Now I want to read them into VisIt, and I'm having problems. Specifically, I have a set of, say, 10 files with names like alp.it_00000.xyz.h5 alp.it_00100.xyz.h5 alp.it_00200.xyz.h5 . . . alpha.it_00900.xyz.h5 I can open each file individually as type CarpetHDF5 and produce a PseudoColor/IsoSurface plot. However, when I load them all as a grouping ("smart", hand-picked, or using a .visit file), the result only shows me the first time step --- the play/fast-forward/etc buttons are greyed out and unresponsive. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? From the VisIt documentation/forums I've seen, if I can load the data as a group, the time steps should be recognized immediately, but perhaps I'm missing a step, or something about the CarpetHDF5 file type doesn't allow this. Thanks, Bernard

How do I get the global integer coordinates for a grid point (i.e. the ones that take into account refinement level)? Cheers, Steve

Hi Please consider joining the weekly Einstein Toolkit phone call at 10 am US central time on Mondays. As usual, you can find instructions how to join on the following web site: http://einsteintoolkit.org/community/support/ I short: the number is (+1) 225-578-4942 and the conference id is 118682#. The next call will be tomorrow, Mon 11th. After that, we will skip a week (holiday in parts of the US), and continue Jan 24th. Frank Löffler

Unable to download Zelmani/CartesianCoordinates
by Soham Mukherjee 11 Jan '16

11 Jan '16

Hi, I have been trying to run the neutron star collapse simulation, using the par file /Cactus/par/arXiv-1111.3344/collapse/tov_collapse_vc_l3.par. I realised that it requires thorns from the Zelmani arrangement, and hence made an attempt to download them I added the following lines to the thorn list, following < https://einsteintoolkit.org/publications/2013_MHD/einsteintoolkit_plus_zelm… >: *# Private thorns!TARGET = $ARR!TYPE = svn!AUTH_URL = https://svn.einsteintoolkit.org/incoming/$2 <https://svn.einsteintoolkit.org/incoming/$2>!URL = http://svn.einsteintoolkit.org/incoming/$2 <http://svn.einsteintoolkit.org/incoming/$2>!CHECKOUT = Zelmani/CartesianCoordinatesZelmani/ZelmaniQuadWaveExtractZelmani/CoreCollapseControl* Out of theses,ZelmaniQuadWaveExtract and CoreCollapseControl downloaded successfully, but CartesianCoordinates gave the following error: *Warning: Could not checkout module Zelmani/CartesianCoordinatessvn: URL 'http://svn.einsteintoolkit.org/incoming/CartesianCoordinates <http://svn.einsteintoolkit.org/incoming/CartesianCoordinates>' doesn't exist.* Since the neutron star collapse simulation uses a parfile distributed with the Einstein Toolkit release, I assume the thorns are available to the public. Is there any updated link for checking out the Zelmani arrangement thorns? Soham

Chunked checkpoints with unchunked HDF5_3D output?
by Bernard Kelly 07 Jan '16

07 Jan '16

Hi. Silly question time: I'd like to write some grid functions to disk as HDF5 3D files that are *unchunked*, but one per output time step. This I'm doing by setting the following parameters: IOUtil::out_mode = "onefile" IOUtil::out_timesteps_per_file = 1 However, an unexpected (to me) side-effect of this is that my checkpoint files are now also unchunked, which leads to longer recovery (and occasionally failure). So ... can I have chunked checkpoint files, but unchunked everything else 3D using CarpetIOHDF5? Thanks, Bernard
