09 Dec '13

Present: Frank, Roland, Roberto de Pietri, Peter, Ian, Vassili, Ian, Erik Synchronization after restrict: * present in Carpet trunk between September and Dec 6th * included in Noether release * incorrect data appears (in the tests that were done) on coarse grids in locations that are overlapping the twice refined fine grid, required 3 refinement levels to show up in tests * will backport to release, Ian to draft email based on the one already send to mailing list * still incorrect for higher level restriction (only usable with cell centering, not on by default) Retiring thorns policy: * the ET thornlist should only contain thorns that are supported and actively maintained * require public policy/procedure how to retire a thorn/parameter * want to model procedure to retire thorns after procedure for parameters * current draft: https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Policies_to_retire_functionality * thorns ADM and LegoExcision have been deprecated since ET_2012_05 * remove testsuites using Exact for which we have an EinsteinExact equivalent. Ian points out that for many but not all of these we verified that the Exact results converge (at the proper order) to the EinsteinExact results * Ian has filed a ticket for the failing CarpetInterp/waveinterp_1p tests, test has been newly activated, we do not have a passing revision. Not obvious where errors are coming from. * Ian updated the Jenkins mailer to include information on which tests changed in the emails, this may cause some incorrect emails until the scripts that drive this have been fully debugged Topics for next call: * subversion to git transition: ** high level: why? what do we want to achieve? ** low level: how do we do it? * sources in ExternalLibraries: ** what to we want to achieve? (reduce executable size? link time? download time?) ** how do we want to achieve it? Yours, Roland

Restriction fix
by Ian Hinder 06 Dec '13

06 Dec '13

Hi, Erik and I have found and fixed a bug in the way Carpet handles restriction and synchronisation. Numerical results on coarse grids might change as a result of this. Previously, the results would have dependent on the number of processes. See https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/1499 for more details. Erik, should this be backported to the release branch at some point? -- Ian Hinder http://numrel.aei.mpg.de/people/hinder

Thorn ADM
by Frank Loeffler 04 Dec '13

04 Dec '13

Hi I would like to take thorn ADM out of the Einstein Toolkit thornlist entirely. It's using ADMMacros (with all the problems that come with it), all test cases use a static conformal metric , which isn't supported anymore and which let's them currently all fail as well. I just committed a bunch of changes to testsuites of other thorns that were using ADM. Most of them were trivial, in one case I had to create a new testsuite using ML_BSSN instead. Now no testsuite of another thorn within the toolkit uses ADM. It's time to retire it. If somebody really would like to use ADM it would likely be better to look at ML_ADM instead (which isn't in the toolkit, but could probably be if there is interest). Please object here loudly if you disagree. If we don't hear from you in some time, thorn ADM will be removed from the thornlist and will no longer be part of releases. Frank

Non-subcylcing AMR
by Steven R. Brandt 02 Dec '13

02 Dec '13

I'm wondering what it would take to get nonsubcycling AMR. I think this capability would be very valuable, as it would open up the possibility of doing elliptic solves on each time step (which is something I need to do). It would also make adaptive time steps easier (something else I need). Finally, it would help with another problem which I might be able to fix by restructuring. My update equation computes the second derivative of a variable, and then syncs it so that I have the second derivative everywhere. Even though a sync is called after the derivative is computed, the ghost zones don't get filled in, and even if they did I'm not sure the values that Carpet would compute would make sense (as the data would have to come by prolongation). If we had a nonsubcycling AMR, I could sync whenever I wanted to within an evolution step and not worry about time levels. I may be able to fix this problem by restructuring the code, but I know I need nonsubcycling in the long run anyway. How hard would it be to teach Carpet how to do this? How hard would it be for me to learn the relevant parts of Carpet to do this? Cheers, Steve

Meeting Minutes

Present: Vassili, Frank, Erik, Ian, Roland * we decided before the release to switch our repositories to git, once LSU has finished software upgrades and Frank has time * would like to (also) run tests for "optional" ET components that are currently commented out and not tested automatically Removal of thorns from main ET thorn list/deprecation: * we had a lively discussion as to how to proceed * uncontroversial: move ADMConstraints into EinsteinArchive and replace with ML_ADMConstraint which provides the same functionality. Reason: ADMConstraints uses old Tmunu interface (optionally) which is deprecated and will be removed. ADMConstraints also uses ADMMacros (is 4th order only etc) which are hard to maintain (we also found a bug in 2010: r107 "Undefine the guts instead of the declare") * uncontroversial: remove old Tmunu interface. Reason: eat up ~30% of total CPU time since it contains a CCTK_IsThornActive in the innermost loop * uncontroversial: retire ADMCoupling since it is only used for the deprecated Tmunu interface, FRIEND mechanism in Cactus is also no longer advertised as good usage. Requires fixes in Exact. * ADMMacros is used by AHFinder. AHFinder seems to work (passes tests) though no one (of the callers) has used it for a long time. Difficult to motivate to why we retire it. * DistortedBHIVP, IDAxiBrillBH, IDAxiOddBrillBH, RoatingDBHIVP: mark as archived using comment. Remove from manifest (comment out) if tests fail. There are objections to moving the repository. New thorns: * CoreCollapseControl: needs example and/or test * CartesianCoordinates: rework into "MultiBlockBase/JacobianBase" and have Llama thorns inherit from it. Keep providing trivial coordinates (same as ADMBase providing Minkowski spacetime) * ZelmaniQuadWaveExtract: needs docs/test cases/examples. Otherwise this is something we'd like. * PAPI: want documentation, include * MemSpeed: want documentation, test case, include * dylib: include if compiles, WARN loudly if it cannot run at runtime * F5: want documentation, include * WaveToyCUDA: keep commented out, assuming testsuites and docs * Boost: objections to size of repo. ran out of time to reach conclusion Related issues: * this idea of having multiple thornlists, one containing a subset and one containing everything was tried in the past and found not to work (since they are hard to keep in sync). There needs to be a master thornlist. * want mechanism to mark tests as "know to fail". Most likely needs to be done in simfactory's files since failures are machine specific * suggestion to not include that tarball in ExternalLibraries, instead download in configure.sh script of thorn only if needed. Not yet fully agreed on whether we want this or not. * no agreed upon way to "retire" a thorn right now, different opinions on how to do this. Yours, Roland

benchmarks
by Steven R. Brandt 02 Dec '13

02 Dec '13

The utils/benchmarks contains a number of parameter files. All of them refer to thorns that are not part of the ET. I'm not sure where they might live. BenchIO BSSN_MoL FlexIO IOFlexIO whisky_init_data whisky whisky_rnsid Are these out of date? Are there better files to use for benchmarking? Cheers, Steve

Einstein Toolkit Meeting Reminder
by Frank Loeffler 02 Dec '13

02 Dec '13

Hi Please consider joining the weekly Einstein Toolkit phone call at 10 am US central time on Mondays. As usual, you can find instructions how to join on the following web site: http://einsteintoolkit.org/community/support/ In short: the number is (+1) 225-578-4942 or (+1) 866-573-0359 and the conference id is 118682#. I propose to archive the following thorns. This means that their repository will be moved to EinsteinArchive (if it's not already there like ADM), and it will be taken out of the Einstein Toolkit thornlist. It will continue to be available for download, but will not receive as much maintenance and testing as thorns within the toolkit. Especially ADM is still needed by some testsuites within the toolkit, and this would obviously need to be changed beforehand. ADM DistortedBHIVP IDAxiBrillBH IDAxiOddBrillBH RoatingDBHIVP Please let us know if you used one of these in the last years. I also suggest to remove all testsuites using Exact that have counter-parts from EinsteinExact. In addition, any other question or comment is of course welcome. Frank

Problems installing EinsteinoolKit
by Samuel Dupree 02 Dec '13

02 Dec '13

Please forgive me for cross posting this note on users(a)einsteintoolkit.org and cactusmaint(a)cactuscode.org, but maintainers(a)enisteintoolkit.org is not accepting any of my email messages. So with my apologies, permit me to proceed. I'm attempting to install EinsteinToolKit on a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X ver. 10.9 (Mavericks). In downloading the components for the EinsteinToolkit using GetComponents of the latest release, I get the following warnings: ----------------------------------------------------------------- 200 components checked out. 0 components updated.
