IllinoisGRMHD Status
by Zach Etienne 21 Apr '14

21 Apr '14

Hi all, I had to call in through Google Voice today, as I have just arrived in Barcelona for the Sant Cugat Forum on Astrophysics. My connection was not great, so I report on my progress here. I fixed a number of compiler warnings in IllinoisGRMHD over the past week, to minimize the chances of any compiling issues. The only remaining warnings are completely harmless (e.g., variable FOO may be used uninitialized). I have verified that IllinoisGRMHD compiles without errors using GCC (4.7.3), Intel (13.1.3 20130617), and BlueWaters' default PGI compiler. In addition, I ran Valgrind tests with poisoning disabled, and zero memory issues were found in my IllinoisGRMHD test case (evolving random initial data). I also backtraced and fixed a discrepancy between the ET IllinoisGRMHD code and our old, trusted GRMHD code version. I am working with Roland to verify that the staggered prolongation/restriction operators work as expected on AMR grids with 2+ levels of refinement on the coarse grid. He is concerned of potential issues with restriction communicating data across two or more levels. Thus far, my tests have focused only on 2-level AMR grids (i.e., one level of refinement on the coarsest grid). The new tests consist of Nth order prolongation and restriction of Nth order polynomial data on staggered grids, testing all four staggerings. I anticipate completing those tests before the next telecon. At the moment, I am confident that there will be no issues in compiling the code on other machines, so would it be okay if we proceeded now to adding IllinoisGRMHD as an experimental thorn, as planned? That is to say, make IllinoisGRMHD part of the default ET download for this upcoming release, but commented out of the default ThornList, with a comment along the lines of: "# IllinoisGRMHD is marked EXPERIMENTAL for the $RELEASENAME version of ET, and it is planned to be incorporated into the next ET release." Please let me know if there are any objections. -Zach * * * Zachariah Etienne Adjunct Professor of Mathematics, West Virginia University and Joint Space-Science Institute Prize Postdoctoral Fellow Gravitational Astrophysics Laboratory, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and Physics Department, University of Maryland, College Park On Sun, Apr 20, 2014 at 3:53 PM, Frank Loeffler <knarf(a)cct.lsu.edu> wrote: > Hi > > Please consider joining the weekly Einstein Toolkit phone call at > 10 am US central time on Mondays. Present: Roland, Zach, Peter, Ian, Frank, Steve, Matt upcoming release: * timetable on wiki https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Release_Details * no new thorns/major changes after 2014-04-21 * release data 2014-05-19 * large chunk of GRHydro updates at https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/1531 will be included ** keep F90 code as default ** switch test data for constrained transport ** plan for future releases: phase out F90 code, phase out divergence cleaning code Failing tests: * currently 2 tests in wavetoy fail * they involve initializing 3 timelevels * Peter to investigate if only grid arrays as involved (then we just document this) or grid functions as well (then we have to fix it) Test suites: * ask Erik and Ian if willing to run using their automated framework on the HPC machines. Individual users to run on "private" machines. * table at https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Release_Details to assign machines to people New code: * test IllinoisGRMHD on all machines to check that it compiles and passes tests * include in ET thornlist but leave commented out and add comment that this is experimental Gallery: * small examples of non-trivial code * BBH (qc0): Ian * BH: Peter * NSNS to HMNS: Roland * NSNS to BH: currently fails * TOV collapse: Roland was volunteered, but suspects this will fail Yours, Roland

Hi Please consider joining the weekly Einstein Toolkit phone call at 10 am US central time on Mondays. As usual, you can find instructions how to join on the following web site: http://einsteintoolkit.org/community/support/ In short: the number is (+1) 225-578-4942 or (+1) 866-573-0359 and the conference id is 118682#. Since we are getting close to the usual release time, we will make plans about what to include, how to handle the release time ect. Frank

Hello all! is there an easy way (via a parameter maybe) to not output the lines beginning with "#" in the IOASCII files? best wishes, Vassili

There won't be an Einstein Toolkit call tomorrow. Too many people will not be available (most will be at the APS meeting). The next Einstein Toolkit call will happen next week Monday, at the usual time. Frank Loeffler

Present: Frank, Roland, Erik, Peter, Matt, Steve transition to git: * soften commit requirements, no longer require review for every change for thorns under heavy development * restrict commits just before release * when using git, no longer propose patches but instead use pull requests Yours, Roland
