Maria, Looks like default g++ on your cluster is outdated. You can check the version by typing, $ g++ ‹-version Versions before 4.7.0 don¹t support the offending '‹std=gnu++11' flag. But the cluster certainly should have more recent compilers installed. Is there a link to the list of software available on biggreen? Try this command: $ module avail - this should list all the modules that are installed on your cluster, including more recent compilers. If any modules are present, they are probably called 'gcc/X.Y.Z' or 'gnu-compilers-X.Y.Z' and you can add the corresponding module like this: $ module load gcc/4.8.1 Try adding this newer module and recompiling: $ make ET-config options=simfactory/mdb/optionlists/biggreen.cfg THORNLIST=manifest/einsteintoolkit.th All the best, - Oleg On 6/28/16, 11:59 AM, "users-bounces(a)einsteintoolkit.org on behalf of Hamilton, Maria" <users-bounces(a)einsteintoolkit.org on behalf of babiuc(a)marshall.edu> wrote: >Hello, > >I was wondering if I can get some help in compiling the Einstein Toolkit >on a cluster called BigGreen >http://www.marshall.edu/itresearch/resources-and-tools/biggreen-cluster/ >I¹ve followed the instructions in >https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Compiling_the_Einstein_Toolkit >I¹ve created biggreen.marshall.edu.ini and biggreen.cfg, which are >attached to this message. >When I issued the commands: >simfactory/bin/sim setup --optionlist= biggreen.cfg --runscript >biggreen.sh >simfactory/bin/sim build --thornlist=manifest/einsteintoolkit.th >I get this error: >Cactus requires a C++11 compiler -- check your C++ compiler and C++ >compiler flags > >When I run: >make ET-config options=simfactory/mdb/optionlists/biggreen.cfg >THORNLIST=manifest/einsteintoolkit.th >I get this error: >checking whether the C++ compiler (g++ -g3 -march=native -std=gnu++11 >-rdynamic) works... no >configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C++ compiler >cannot create executables (see >configs/<configname>/config-data/config.log for details). > >I am attaching also the config.log. > >Thank you, >Maria Babiuc >

Hello, I was wondering if I can get some help in compiling the Einstein Toolkit on a cluster called BigGreen http://www.marshall.edu/itresearch/resources-and-tools/biggreen-cluster/ I’ve followed the instructions in https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Compiling_the_Einstein_Toolkit I’ve created biggreen.marshall.edu.ini and biggreen.cfg, which are attached to this message. When I issued the commands: simfactory/bin/sim setup --optionlist= biggreen.cfg --runscript biggreen.sh simfactory/bin/sim build --thornlist=manifest/einsteintoolkit.th I get this error: Cactus requires a C++11 compiler -- check your C++ compiler and C++ compiler flags When I run: make ET-config options=simfactory/mdb/optionlists/biggreen.cfg THORNLIST=manifest/einsteintoolkit.th I get this error: checking whether the C++ compiler (g++ -g3 -march=native -std=gnu++11 -rdynamic) works... no configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C++ compiler cannot create executables (see configs/<configname>/config-data/config.log for details). I am attaching also the config.log. Thank you, Maria Babiuc

looking for help with CT_MultiLevel
by Slinker, Kyle Patrick 27 Jun '16

I have been working with CT_MultiLevel in an attempt to solve the non-conformally-flat constraint equations and I'm wondering if there is an error in the thorn. Where I'm potentially seeing an issue is in CT_SolvePsiEquation.cc and CT_SolveErrorEquation.cc in the definitions of dtime (for both files this is line 33 in the Brahe release). First of all, having 0.5 in this definition means that the coefficient for the central point in the finite difference is hard-coded to a second order stencil. When using fourth order, this coefficient should be 0.4, I believe. This effectively changes the SOR omega. More importantly, I don't think it accounts for ct_cxx, ct_cyy, or ct_czz. So the central point in the finite difference is not getting multiplied by whatever coefficient the user is setting. Am I misunderstanding how the thorn works or are these really problems? I've attached what I believe is a way to fix them. Thanks for your help. Kyle Slinker

Present: Frank, Eloisa, Matt, Roland, Steve, Zach, Erik, Using slack to replace the IRC channel: * Frank inverstigated slack and used it in a different project and has had good experience so far. A test slack project has been created: https://einsteintoolkit.slack.com if you would to test this please send an email an Frank Loeffler knarf(a)cct.lsu.edu until we have a more permanent solution (in case we decide to use slack). Please provide your email address and name to appear in slack. Making grid function storage in HydroBase optional: * currently there are a number of grid functions that are not always being used or could be recomputed * there is a desire to make storage for those optional with the default being to have storage * Roland feels that this can be cumbersome if all client thorns require logic to check for storage rather than being able to rely on a complete set of variables always being present. This applies in particular to eps which can only be recomputed if the EOS is known Making GRHydro_Initdata independent of HydroBase: * agree that this is good idea, would make it useful as ID generator for other ID thorns eg for shock tubes * some parts are unfortunately tied to GRHydro and would have to be moved out of the thorn Reducing number of checkpointed variables in McLachlan: * RHS variables are fine to not be checkpointed. There should be a helper thorn ML_BSSN_Helper that adjust the checkpoint tags at runtime * constraints need to be checkpointed since they require prolongation to compute which cannot be re-created after recovery Carpet-preSync by Steve, a pull request exists: * an attempt to move the start of the SYNC forward so that a grid function that is computed only in the interior later needed everywhere SYNCing happens automatically and early TeamSpeak or Mumble as Google Hangout replacement: * both use equivalent technology * community is split about which one is better * hosting at LSU may be possible as IT is interested in this * external hosters tend to offer both for little money, will need grant money for this Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. Present: Eloisa, Roland, Frank, Matt, Yosef, Alternatives to Google hangout (should we require them): * at the workshop TeamSpeak was mentioned since it is used by LIGO and can handle large numbers of participants with little effort (hundred and up to 1000 were used by LIGO) * an open-source alternative using similar technology (same codec) is mumble * both offer a free-as-in-beer server as long as the number of participants is mall (<32 for teamspeak) * both (should) offer public calls and offer clients for all major OS * Frank looked into them a bit and will try and see what would be involved in hosting a server (at LSU) or also to pay for commercial hosting Report on ET workshop: * 30 students from around the world * mostly successful, however still points that need improvement * Matt request to announce the streaming earlier and to take time zone differences into account. Currently it was 7:00am ET. Link to recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6pGoJ_5gdo * Bruno will put up the slides for the talks at http://events.unitn.it/en/et-eu2016 talks are already present * major current issue on wishlist is scalability and true AMR when using Carpet: * a discussion about current and future funding of the ET took place * future development in GRHydro and general cleanup was discussed Selected talks: * EOS framework and con2prim method by Wolfgang Kastaun * Cosmology applications of the ET by Hayley MacPherson * the full list is here: http://events.unitn.it/sites/events.unitn.it/files/download/et-eu2016/ET_WO… Brahe release: * happened during release, please report any issues * please propose new features for inclusion now so that they can be tested before the next release Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. simfactory question about hwloc and building utilities
by Vassilios Mewes 19 Jun '16

19 Jun '16

Hello everyone! A quick question about hwloc: We are trying to building an ET executable on a new machine, using HWLOC_DIR = BUILD in the .cfg file, as we want to use the bundled hwloc. The build of the ET succeeds, but when simfactory builds the utilities, we get the following error: Copying hwloc-bind from /usr/bin/hwloc-bind to /home/vass/Cactus/exe/sim Copying hwloc-calc from /usr/bin/hwloc-calc to /home/vass/Cactus/exe/sim Copying hwloc-info from /usr/bin/hwloc-info to /home/vass/Cactus/exe/sim Copying hwloc-assembler-remote from /usr/bin/hwloc-assembler-remote to /home/vass/Cactus/exe/sim make[1]: *** *No rule to make target '/usr/bin/hwloc-ls', needed by '/home/vass/Cactus/exe/sim/hwloc-ls'. Stop.* So apparently, the build process of the utilities still searches for hwloc executables in /usr/bin, although we specified to build hwloc in the .cfg file. Shouldn't it actually use the built binaries? It then fails copying hwloc-ls, which does not exist. How can I tell the build system to actually use the hwloc binaries we have built? Best wishes, Vassili

I know that this isn't ideal, as it currently requires me to update this, but it would be a bit unwieldy to have this included in each svn checkout (we also need to get the recordings out...). Frank
