Meeting Minutes for 2019-11-14
by Steven R. Brandt 18 Nov '19

18 Nov '19

Present: Steven R. Brandt, Helvi, Zach, Roland, Maria Babiuc, Bill Gabella, Christopher Evans, Geraint Pratten, Peter, Robynm, Yosef Led by: Helvi Note taker: Steve * Release planning * Bikal ETK code from Zach * Helvi volunteered to review * Zach thinks it's ready to review now, he's been working on documentation * It does not generate a monolithic thorn, you have to specify finite difference order gauge, etc., at the time the thorn is genereated. Maybe many of these can be runtime? * Spherical BSSN and Spherical MHD from vasilly * Manuella wants an applications paper with both before she makes the thorns open source, these thorns probably won't be in the next release. * Upgrade to illinois GRMHD * Notebooks in repo serve as documentation (no review for documentation update is required) * Piecewise polytropic equation of state is added * Not a big review task, Roland agreed to do this * Zach also has a TOV code which he might want to contribute * Steve would like to get Presync in * Peter says that he will have updates to the self-force code * Gallery examples * BBH gallery example has been updated * BNS gallery example * Roland has verified the example works and the differences occur because * we now use EOS_Omni * sensitive to level of optimization O3 and O2 * Steve suggests it would be nice to have a bigger gallery * Roland wants GRMD example * Could have a self-force gallery example * ET Status on MacOS * Tested macports on Catalina * No need to compile gcc anymore * Same problem as Mojave, four tests hang (CT Multilevel, etc.), cause unknown * Set up Homebrew * Can compile with homebrew.cfg or patch to generic.cfg * Fails with the same tests * Hangs not verified with Homebrew + Catalina * Note that tickets need to be reviewed. Please review. * ETK meeting in Auguest at LSU

GRHydro::Con2Prim question
by Giulia Crotti 15 Nov '19

15 Nov '19

Hi all, I am using GRHydro in running a simulation, and I get a crash in Con2Prim at iteration 473 on reflevel 4. Given that I have set 8 refinement levels, I'm wondering why Con2Prim is being executed at iteration 473 on this reflevel: shouldn't it be executed only at an iteration which is a multiple of 8? Maybe I'm missing something fundamental. Thank you, Cheers, Giulia Crotti

Meeting Minutes for 2019-11-07
by Gabella, William E 07 Nov '19

Present: Roland, Bill, Vassili, Yosef, Helvi, Peter, Zach, Christopher, Maria (Babiuc-Hamilton) Roland chair, Bill minutes o Next Release Planning: Ideas for new features, improvements * Helvi has modified gravity in library she and Miguel host, already there, but should we include in ETK? Criterion is if someone wants to use it besides the author. Should be included on suggestions page. Link to Helvi's repo is https://bitbucket.org/canuda/ also Lean, Proca, and evolution of scalar fields useful for boson stars. Helvi needs to consult with Miguel on these items for inclusion. * Vassili suggests Spherical BSSN and MHD thorn. Helvi suggests two step process. How long? Roland says plan two months calendar time from when you want it included. Lots of time waiting for reviewing, etc. To get in the next release start in the next month...also the holidays will get in the way. Vassili will discuss check with collaborators and decide. * Zach's BaikalETK code, NRPY based and Erik has performed some benchmarks. BaikalETK is faster. Zach proposes for inclusion in the next release. Jupyter Notebook and Python interface. Run a Python module and generates BSSN thorn---a drop in for Maclachlan AMR thorn. * Also Zach's Illinois GRMHD with piecewise polytrope support. There is good documentation now in Jupyter Notebooks. Single polytrope generates same results as now. Add to the Wiki page. * Links for the thorn (and ETK) release in the minutes: http://einsteintoolkit.org/contribute.html https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Main_Page (see Release Details and Release Process) https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Release_Details https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Release_Process Peter, maybe re-organize the Wiki to find important things easier. o BBH Gallery example * Helvi is uploading it which takes time. o BNS Gallery example * Roland is running it now and will then upload it. * Maria having trouble with the BNS example. Roland says workstation with 12 cores it is one day. Roland thinks this should not be so slow. Peter could be really running on one core. o Rot'n of minute takers and call chairs (as well as other duties) * See new Wiki page for rotation https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/ET_tasks_rota . When you do a task move yourself to the bottom of the list and put a date on it. * Maria can take minutes in two weeks, 21 Nov 2019). * Zach hosting on 21st Nov. * Automatic reminders. o Unanswered questions on mailing list. * Looks like none. o Tickets in BitBucket. * Should keep an eye on these, and review them. Yours, Bill

Re: [Users] [ET Trac] #2064: Add GiRaFFE to the Einstein Toolkit

I’d liken the Jupyter notebook phase more to > collaboratively writing a journal article with a shared git repo than code > development within such a repo. > I'd like to add a point to this, out of frustration: A few weeks ago I downloaded and ran Tutorial-BaikalETK.ipynb. Today I try to "git pull", and it doesn't work, because there are differences in the output everywhere (e.g. "Finished BSSN symbolic expressions in 1.2987918853759766 seconds"). The only way I see is to undo my changes ("git checkout"), and then pull your changes. In this case that's fine because there are no major changes, but if I had made changes I'd be in trouble. I think the problem is that the output is stored in the git repo. In the future, you might want to switch to a system where (a) notebooks automatically have all output removed before they are committed, and (b) upon commit, Travis or a similar system creates for-viewing-only notebooks with a standardized output. -erik > After the notebook has been written, a separate Python module containing > the code developed in the Jupyter notebook is then written. Missing file for configuring build ubuntu.cfg
by David N Bradley 04 Nov '19

04 Nov '19

Hello All: I am in process of installing the ET system, and can not find the file ubuntu.cfg needed for configuring for Mint. ./simfactory/bin/sim setup-silent --optionlist=ubuntu.cfg --runscript debian.sh recently reformated and installed mint 19.1 and lost my old setups. David
