How to add thorn CarpetAdaptiveRegrid to simulate
by Steve Hawk 16 Jun '19

16 Jun '19

Hello: I am trying to do a simulation about wormholes-trumpet using ETK. Using AMR techniques seems necessary to save lots of computing memory at the moment. I download all the thorns following the instructions from the ETK websites, then add the statement: ActiveThorns = “CarpetAdaptiveRegrid" and other necessary thorns in the par files, to prepare for a simulation. But when I compile it, it tells me CarpetAdaptiveRegrid can not be found! Then I check the catalog of Cactus, I find CarpetAdaptiveRegrid is just in the repos/carpet, not belongs to arrangments/Carpet. So I want to ask is there any methods to add CarpetAdaptiveRegrid to successfully compile with it? (I try to modify the original einsteintoolkit.th<http://einsteintoolkit.th> file to add CarpetAdaptiveRegrid into it, but it tells me the conflicts between CarpetRegrid2 and CarpetAdaptiveRegrid!) Or how to compile ETK with adding into CarpetAdaptiveRegrid into it to achieve AMR? Thanks! Best Regards! Xiaoxiao

Norm2 calculation on different grid levels
by Elena De Paoli 15 Jun '19

15 Jun '19

Hello, I'm doing a simulation for BBH and I want to calculate the norm2 of the Hamiltonian constraints on different grid levels. Ideally i would like to calculate it first removing the first level of the grid, then removing it and the second one and so on...(the purpose is that i want to exclude the boundary contribution to the calculation). Do you know if there is a tool in the ET to do it? Thanks Elena De Paoli

Present: Helvi, Roland, Peter, Yosef ET tutorial server * cannot currently create account requests via web-form: fixed as of beginning of week, was broken March till June * compiling produces many server down / server up emails: still happens due to latency of frontend responding to http requests, could either ask to move VM to different node or to split system into "login" VM and "worker" VMs for users * Roland to ask admins to move to a different hardware node Provide compiled version of the ET * https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2260/provide-compiled-… * useful for people that are less experienced in numerical work, which may also be the same group of people that are likely to have problems setting up docker * Helvi may have time to try this out on her Ubuntu system, serving as a test-case since she has never used docker before Memory issues: * https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2194/memory-increase-d… * initial idea was that this could be communication buffers that were never shrunk * patch that frees this memory was provided but does not seem to help in all cases * two more cases that fail, small one by Miguel, large one by Gabriele * memory usage in failing case by Miguel is very uneven, possibly due to communication buffers ET US workshop at RIT * broadcast will likely be done via bluejeans * working on having camera and mike for remote participants to see the screen and the audience * also for lunch discussion * link will be send to mailing list and be available on workshop page https://ccrg.rit.edu/content/events/2019-06-17/north-american-einstein-tool… * have discussion about changed citation policy for ET during lunch discussion Gallery examples will be updated * TOV: small version for online/jupyter tutorial needs to be uploaded * BBH: in progress, waiting in queue on local cluster * BNS: in progress, Peter travelling next week Peter's self-force code: * no updates, will discuss at Capra meeting next week unanswered question on mailing list / open tickets sorted by update time * none at this point There will be no ET call next week (just after the ET meeting), next call June 27th. Present: Bill, Christopher, Peter, Steve, Helvi * North American ET Meeting 17-19 June 2019 in Rochester, US - Please register - Website: https://ccrg.rit.edu/content/events/2019-06-17/north-american-einstein-tool… - Broadcast via bluejeans * European ET Meeting 2-6 September 2019 in London, UK - Please register (deadline 31 July 2019) - Website: https://sites.google.com/view/eetm2019/home * Change citation policy for Einstein Toolkit - cite code directly via a DOI reference instead of only quoting the paper by Loeffler et al 2011 - information on this topic, see e.g. D. Katz' talk about software citation and sustainability at Charm++ workshop at NCSA starting at page 19: http://charm.cs.uiuc.edu/charmWorkshop/slides/14-Katz-Sustainability.pdf. - in practise: likely update DOI after each release - maybe example for current release - *new policy activated from 12 July 2019 onwards if there are no objections* * Memory increase during regridding (ET Trac #2194) - again observed memory increase after regridding which can be a bottleneck for large-scale simulations - check parameter file and plot on trac; Roland checking latest report - ping Erik * Gallery examples will be updated - TOV: small version for online/jupyter tutorial needs to be uploaded - BBH: in progress - BNS: in progress * Self-force code by Peter Diener et al - possibly included in the next ET release - currently in different repositories;. possible restructuring to make inclusion more straight-forward; -- =========================================== Dr. Helvi Witek Royal Society University Research Fellow Theoretical Particle Physics and Cosmology Department of Physics King's College London ===========================================
