Present: Roland, Steve, Peter, Erik, Keith, Lorenzo, Samuel, Liwei, Maria, Allen, Jay Chair: Zach, Minutes: Beyhan ET Release update (Roland) - Release date has been pushed by a week. - Everything is up and ready. - Two gallery examples (BBH <https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2172/test-binary-black…> and Multipatch <https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2174/test-multi-patch-…> need to be updated). - Tests are running well on clusters. - Lots of failures in GRHydro which also exist in the last release in many clusters (Sunrise, Supermuc, Supermic, QueenBee, db1 and Cori). - There will be a new gallery example (Fishbone-Moncrief disk) that will probably be put after the release. - Canuda Scalar thorns do not have any documentation files, which are required for inclusion (See ticket <https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2485/include-complex-a…> ) Samuel's presentation on modularizing IllinoisGRMHD (Modular GRMHD: Con2prim Routines) - Recording of the presentation is available at here <https://www.cct.lsu.edu/~sbrandt/et-meeting-samcupp-11-10-2022.mp4> - Working version of the code currently available at here <https://github.com/SamuelCupp/Con2Prim_beta> Unanswered questions: - Nothing was discussed. Nov 3, 2022 Present: Steve, Peter, Keith Dow, Beyhan, Johnny Taso, Roland, Leo, Zach Release: Behind on the testing Nearly all contributers have responded Larger than usual release team Code freeze in 2-3 days Debated bug fix for synchronizing scalars. One person is not enough to do the release The schedule was a bit weird and didn't quite work out. Roland will make notes to improve it. Discussed https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/CarpetX_Transition What thorns need to be ported over? Ticket Roland wants in: incorrect WENO coefficients. Terrance has been traveling. Zach and Leo will remind him. Zach wants to break components of GRHydro into pieces, e.g. Con2Prim, allowing them to mix and match. Zach is trying to make an infrastructure agnostic version, usable in other codes. Wants to show it off next week and get comments. Ticket 963 improve McLaughlin accuracy, cannot compile because of hwloc and cactus fails with an assertion error. Ticket 2364 avoid opening and closing hdf5 files during output. Next release. Avoiding writing one checkpoint file per MPI process

Hello, In order to avoid stressing the filesystem on the cluster I'm running on, I was suggested to avoid writing one output/checkpoint file per MPI process and instead collecting data from multiple processes before outputting/checkpointing happens. I found the combination of parameters IO::out_mode = "np" IO::out_proc_every = 8 does the job for output files, but I still have one checkpoint file per process. Is there a similar parameter, or combination of parameters, which can be used for checkpoint files? Thank you very much, Lorenzo Ennoggi

Postdoc at the University of Canterbury

Hi everyone, There is a generic two year postdoc position in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Canterbury, NZ, where applicants can apply to work with myself as well as collaborate with David Wiltshire from Physics on projects using the Einstein Toolkit. https://jobs.canterbury.ac.nz/jobdetails/ajid/4gxd8/Academic-School-of-Math… Dr. Stevens research is in the field of mathematical and numerical relativity focusing on black holes, gravitational waves, global properties/asymptotic structure and IBVP formulations of the Einstein equations and Friedrich’s conformal field equations. Ongoing projects include global numerical evolutions of asymptotically simple space-times, the numerical calculation of the Newman-Penrose constants, a numerical implementation of Cauchy-characteristic matching, quasinormal mode calculations in modified theories and the scattering problem for gravitational waves. David Wiltshire has an ongoing collaboration, with a PhD student jointly supervised by Hayley Macpherson (Chicago), to apply Einstein toolkit to cosmological simulations. To date such simulations have been used to explore the self-consistency of the standard model of cosmology. A future project with Chris Stevens aims to explore Einstein toolkit simulations with an initial small level of backreaction from inhomogeneities which are nonetheless consistent with the cosmic microwave background radiation. The focus is to explore alternatives to the FLRW geometry, at a time when the cosmological principle is under increasing pressure from observations such as the quasar dipole.
