Long-term research appointment in computational astrophysics at Milano-Bicocca (Italy)
by Bruno Giacomazzo 21 Apr '22

21 Apr '22

Sorry if you received this more than once, but I thought this could be interesting for users and developers of the toolkit. The University of Milan-Bicocca (Italy) invites expressions of interest for a 3+2 year research position in HPC applications to astrophysics. The astrophysics group at Milan-Bicocca provides a vibrant environment with expertise covering all aspects of gravitational-wave astronomy, relativistic astrophysics, galactic dynamics, and numerical relativity. This is embedded in a wider astronomical context including both observational and experimental activities. Our group has tight connections with the LISA Consortium, the Virgo Collaboration, the Einstein Telescope Science Board, the European Pulsar Timing Array, and the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) via the TEONGRAV national initiative. Staff members with matching interests include Colpi, Dotti, Gerosa, Giacomazzo, Lupi, and Sesana. Milan is a beautiful, international city in the north of Italy. Mountains and lakes are just around the corner. Art, culture, and food are outstanding. The city hosts three international airports with worldwide connections. This recruitment campaign is part of a wider national initiative supporting HPC-related computational activities throughout the country. This is a major investment program directly supported by the European Union. It will provide the most ideal context for ambitious candidates wishing to develop and apply state-of-the-art computational and machine-learning tools to current astrophysical and gravitational-wave modeling issues. The researcher will be appointed at the so-called "RTDA" level for 3 years. The contract can also be extended for 2 more years depending on funding availability. The starting date is negotiable, with the earliest and latest dates on January 1st, 2023 and May 1st, 2023, respectively. RTDA researchers are full time university employees (with full benefits, such as health insurance and pension plan), have limited teaching duties, and they are eligible to fully supervise research MSc student projects. This is an ideal setup for early-career researchers wishing to transition toward research independence and start developing their own group. The successful candidate will have a PhD in Physics, Astronomy, Computer Science, or related discipline, strong programming skills, and previous experience in one or more of the following topics: HPC workflows, GPU software development, computational astrophysics, gravitational-wave astronomy, numerical relativity, statistical data analysis, machine learning. Applications should include a CV with a list of publications and a two-page statement covering research interests and plans. These should be sent to bruno.giacomazzo(a)unimib.it by June 15th, 2022 for full consideration. Candidates should also arrange for two reference letters to be sent to bruno.giacomazzo(a)unimib.it by June 15th, 2022. We strive to build a diverse and inclusive environment and welcome expressions of interest from traditionally underrepresented groups. Women are especially encouraged to apply. For inquiries please do not hesitate to contact Bruno Giacomazzo ( bruno.giacomazzo(a)unimib.it) or Davide Gerosa (davide.gerosa(a)unimib.it).

How to use Formaline -- symbol table/file error
by Bernard Kelly 19 Apr '22

19 Apr '22

Hi. I've frequently included Formaline in my ThornList, but never tried to use it to access the snapshot it saved of the codebase I compiled into a particular Cactus executable. Now I'm trying to use it, and I'm having problems. The documentation says I should invoke it thus: > gdb -P formaline.py exe/cactus_sim Since my executable sits in a different directory (bin) for production runs, what I actually run is the following, with the following failure message: ---------------------------- pfe20.bjkelly1 60> gdb -P formaline.py bin/cactus_sim_ET_2021_05_BC Traceback (most recent call last): File "formaline.py", line 29, in <module> cactus_source = gdb.parse_and_eval("cactus_source") gdb.error: No symbol table is loaded. Use the "file" command. ---------------------------- Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong here? Thanks, Bernard -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Bernard Kelly -- CRESST Assistant Research Scientist, NASA/GSFC Gravitational Astrophysics Laboratory --- Code 663 Phone: +1 (301) 286-7243 *** Fax: +1 (301) 286-2226 Web: http://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/sed/bio/bernard.j.kelly ORCID: orcid.org/0000-0002-3326-4454 ------------------------------------------------------------------

Reflection symmetry for staggered vector potential
by Jay Vijay Kalinani 11 Apr '22

11 Apr '22

Dear all, In the GRMHD code Spritz, we define the vector potential components as staggered grid-functions (defined on cell-edges) within interface.ccl in the following way: #Avec_x(i,j+1/2,k+1/2) real Avec_x type = GF Timelevels=3 tags='tensortypealias="D" interpolator="matter" Prolongation="STAGGER011"' "x-component of the Vector Potential" #Avec_y(i+1/2,j,k+1/2) real Avec_y type = GF Timelevels=3 tags='tensortypealias="D" interpolator="matter" Prolongation="STAGGER101"' "y-component of the Vector Potential" #Avec_z(i+1/2,j+1/2,k) real Avec_z type = GF Timelevels=3 tags='tensortypealias="D" interpolator="matter" Prolongation="STAGGER110"' "z-component of the Vector Potential" I was hoping to know if there is support provided within the Einstein Toolkit (maybe via the ReflectionSymmetry thorn) to use reflection symmetries (for example, along z=0 plane or even octant symmetry) for such aforementioned staggered variables. Any suggestions or insights on this would be very helpful. Thank you very much in advance. Cheers, Jay

Meeting Minutes 2022-04-07
by Gabella, William E 07 Apr '22

07 Apr '22

Present: Peter D, Bill G, Zach E, Yosef Z, Roland H, Atul K, Steve B, Chair: Peter D, Minutes: Bill G * next [https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Release_Process ET release], [https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Release_Details Details]. ** The Kranc and NRPy+ codes, regeneration. Roland, will check and run make (now). Seems to be working, but with the Readme hash for NRPy+, so the older code. Zach, looking at WUThorns recently and Baikal has not been updated in a long time. Core C code is the same, but different in the Python and Codegen side. Also the automation of the CCL files has been improved. Because it take a long time for 8th order finite diff, it does a code gen in parallel, and Python's GIL does not allow parallelization easily, so NRPy clones itself, so when it is finished has to combine the results, uses Pickling. Zach found race conditions in the old version of Baikal that caused problems in the Codegen of Baikal and these have been remedied. Zach, advocates for reviewing the new NRPy+ stuff. Roland, we check regeneration just to see it works. You should be able to regen it, if one wants. So that if someone types to regen the code they get the latest versions. Zach suggests to move on to the newer version. A diff will show a lot of differences, Zach moved code between .h files to .c files, to speed up the compilation. Does pass the unittests that were set up. Zach is using the new version for BBHs, for his work. The "new way" is the code to use; the "old way" is still there. Zach can write instructions for testing. Zach, new code is in NRPy+ master and in Jupyter notebooks. Roland, but that is not what the Readme files say to do. Zach, could convert the notebooks to Python files. Roland, prefers if could cd in Baikal_ETK and it would build with a Makefile. There is a one liner that runs the Jupyter by converting to Python and running. Feature freeze is the 12th of April. Decide on a name? Those present voted for Bernhard Riemann as the name of the next release. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernhard_Riemann ** Gallery, BBH? Roland, no response from students, APS is in the way. Steve could do it, but better if students do it. Steve, the BBH gallery is fairly will automated with Python scripts. A little early to run the gallery examples. Usual advice, if you have never run an example, do it soon. And the run it again closer to and then after the Feature Freeze. ** FLRW Solver Roland, has not tried to compile it, will do that. Needs the Python C development files, which may or may not be present on certain clusters. Embeds Python interpreter in the compiled C code and runs preprocessed code. It might also need some non-standard modules. Python external library, maybe. If so difficult, we do not want to include it this round. [https://www.einsteintoolkit.org/tools/unanswered.php unanswered question on mailing list] Garrison's post about Seg Fault in CarpetReduce, when ghost zones set to 1 for reduction. Roland will respond and ask again for a par file. [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues?status=open&status=new… open tickets sorted by update time] #2601 Add four parameters for carpet, Liwei has added six parameters with all x,y,z being treated ecumenically. https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2601/add-four-more-par… #2392 Roland, default values of keyword parameters not checked. Defaults for keywords were not set correctly, just taking the first one in a list. Been around for 10+ years. Steve does have fix for this at compiles time, is a pull request. That does NOT close the ticket because of other issues. Roland, should we keep the runtime checks? If we have fixed the compiletime checks for these keyword parameters. Steve agrees do not need a runtime check for these...so maybe can close this ticket. Steve, wants this PR in. AHfinder is used without seeing the AHFinder bug. Roland, it is a level 3 or 4 warning. AHFinder has the incorrect defaults; AHFinderDirect is fine, from Jonathan. https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2392/default-values-of… #2518 BlueGeneQ support? Nothing done. # 963 Improve McLachlan accuracy #2589 Adding Kuibit to the tutorial server. Also a Pull Request to update the server used for the tutorial server. Steve and Roland have a discussion about the details. Steve will try to review and get it in. https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2589/modernize-informa… [https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues?status=new&status=open… tickets ready for review] # 2364 is an enhancement only, so not a big deal. * Any other business * Chairs / Minutes April 14: Chair Roland, MInutes Atul -- ===================================== William Gabella Research Assistant Professor Department of Physics and Astronomy Vanderbilt University Nashville, TN USA b.gabella(a)vanderbilt.edu (o) 615-343-2713
