PhD and Postdoc position compact object mergers at University of Hamburg
by Stephan Rosswog 20 Nov '25

20 Nov '25

Dear colleagues apologies if you receive this more than once. As part of the University of Hamburg's Excellence Cluster "Quantum Universe" there are two open positions related to the theory/modelling of compact object mergers: i) Postdoc "Neutron star - black hole mergers” The specific topic is related to mergers of black holes with neutron stars and their various multi-messenger signatures including gravitational wave, electromagnetic and neutrino signals. The successful candidate possesses demonstrated expertise in the relevant areas of theoretical astrophysics (general relativity, hydrodynamics, nuclear equations of state, neutrino physics/transport, nuclear reactions and radiative transfer), in code development with compiled programming languages and in computational physics/supercomputing. Candidates with expertise in the construction of numerical relativity initial conditions are particularly encouraged to apply. The application deadline is December 22, 2025. For more information please contact Stephan.Rosswog(a)uni-hamburg.de The application has to be submitted via the application system of the University of Hamburg, please see https://www.uni-hamburg.de/stellenangebote/ausschreibung.html?jobID=7bd2c13… for more information. ii) PhD position "Signatures of beyond-standard-model physics in neutron star mergers" The project will explore potential signatures of beyond standard model physics in the merger of two neutron stars. The ideal candidate has knowledge of general relativity, hydrodynamics, particle physics and computational physics with compiled programming languages. The application deadline is December 22, 2025. For more information please contact Stephan.Rosswog(a)uni-hamburg.de and/or Sam.Witte(a)physics.ox.ac.uk The application has to be submitted via the application system of the University of Hamburg, please see https://www.uni-hamburg.de/stellenangebote/ausschreibung.html?jobID=7bd2c13… <https://www.uni-hamburg.de/stellenangebote/ausschreibung.html?jobID=110962f…> for more information. Problem with tutorial
by Julia Speicher 19 Nov '25

19 Nov '25

Hello, I am new to the Einstein toolkit, so I wanted to go through the tutorial first. Unfortunately, I do not get beyond the step of building the Einstein toolkit: %%bash ./simfactory/bin/sim build -j2 --thornlist thornlists/einsteintoolkit.th I attached the output as a text file due to its length. The output ends with: /usr/bin/ld: /usr/local/lib/../lib/libadios2_cxx11_mpi.so.2.10: error adding symbols: DSO missing from command line collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status make[1]: *** [/home/j/Cactus/lib/make/make.configuration:150: /home/j/Cactus/exe/cactus_sim] Error 1 make: *** [Makefile:265: sim] Error 2 After this cell, I cannot proceed further since the executable "cactus_sim" was not created. The step of building the Einstein toolkit assumes that SimFactory has been set up successfully. The step for configuring it, %%bash ./simfactory/bin/sim setup-silent Gives the output: Here we will define some necessary Simulation Factory defaults. Determining local machine name: et-juphub --------------------SUMMARY--------------------: [default] user = j email = j allocation = NO_ALLOCATION ------------------END SUMMARY------------------: Contents successfully written to /home/j/Cactus/repos/simfactory2/etc/defs.local.ini I am running the web-based tutorial, so I thought just running the Jupyter notebook cells would suffice (I tried restarting the kernel, but this did not help). Do you know how I could resolve this error? Thank you very much for your help, and best wishes, Julia

First Circular of Workshop on the “New Frontiers in Strong Gravity IV” in Benasque in July 2026.
by Helvi Witek 12 Nov '25

12 Nov '25

Dear colleagues, The fourth installment of the two-week workshop “New frontiers in strong gravity” will take place in Benasque, Spain, from 19–31 July 2026 at the Science Center in Benasque (https://benasque.org/new_general/cgi-bin/years.pl?ano=2026 <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://benasque.org/new_general/cgi-bin/years.…>) in the Spanish Pyrenees. The registration will open in Spring 2026. The goal of the workshop is to foster new ideas and collaborations by bringing together experts across different disciplines, including gravity, gravitational wave astrophysics, numerical and mathematical relativity. We plan for only two talks per day, with ample time for informal discussions, sessions and collaborations. We aim at creating a diverse and inclusive meeting that thrives through communication and discussion, and we would greatly welcome participation and contributions from different communities, as well as researchers at different career stages. Topics planned for this installment include: * Precision GW modeling * Future GW facilities * New detector proposals (atom IFOs, lunar, high frequency, deciHz, μHz) and sources * Future data analysis * Tests of beyond-GR * Cosmology * PBHs/Memory Burden * Formal mathematical relativity, perturbative methods (PN, PM) * Memory, tails, other soft effects * Analog gravity * Environmental effects (dark matter halos, accretion disks) * Scattering and Amplitudes * Developments in quantum gravity * New developments in NR / GPU computing We would appreciate it if you could kindly note the dates if you plan to attend and forward the announcement to interested researchers in our field. We look forward to welcoming you to Benasque. On behalf of the organisers (D. Blas, P. Figueras, S. Nissanke, L. Stein, H. Witek) --------------------------------------------- Dr. Helvi Witek Associate Professor Department of Physics University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 247 Loomis Lab 1110 W Green St Urbana, IL 61801 ---------------------------------------------

Meeting Minutes for 2025-11-07
by Lucas Timotheo Sanches 06 Nov '25

06 Nov '25

Present: Steve, Lucas (minutes), Roland, Peter, Zach (chair) , Deborah Ferguson, Keith Dow, Johnny Tsao, Leo Werneck # Agenda items - BBH gallery example: Rhiannon Silva updated last date tested. Also uploaded tar.gz file. They will update the plots next. This item will be marked as resolved. - EU ET workshop: The responsible for organizing the event was not in the call. The proper announcement was made and advertised in the ETK page. # Unanswered questions on the mailing list. - No new messages # Tickets - 2897: Roland responded and the reporter is working to obtain a backtrace. - 2172: BBH example update underway. - 2858: Lucas and some people in the group are able to compile and run on MN5, but the cluster is complicated and Lucas does not now if the simfactory files should be pushed into the repository. - 2706: Zach says that the default resolution is very low, and should be increased a little bit. Roland proposes that we fix this in the gallery example and leave the defaults untouched.
