Meeting Minutes for 2014-12-08
by Roland Haas 08 Dec '14

08 Dec '14

Present: Roland, Frank, Yosef, Matt, Ian, Peter, Josh, Philipp Josh and Yosef report problems calling the toll free number from a phone. Tickets: * remove snprintf implementation in Cactus since Cactus requires (and tests for) C99 which always provides snprintf * patch to abort early in CST has become redundant due to Erik's recent efforts to build ExternalLibraries along with normal thorns * Jenkins now works again Ticket system: * desire to have screening of incoming tickets * talking points: ** The screening process will assign a priority to the ticket ** Description of priorities *** blocker - Cactus does no longer build *** critical - at least one thorn always fails to run *** major - needs to be fixed before release or documented in release notes *** minor - may or may not be fixed before release *** new - the initial priority created by trac to search for unclassified tickets ** Desire to have ticket status "Looked at"/"Triaged" instead of "Confirmed" that signifies that screening was done. ** Assign it to a person likely being able to help with it. This should be based on common sense, and assignation does not imply an obligation to provide a fix but is kindly requested to look at it. ** milestones to be used only during the release process to mark tickets we want to push until the release * Ian tasked with testing these ideas with ~10 existing tickets * Frank checked automated assignments are reasonable ** Change GetComponents from Eric Seidel ** Remove automated assignment from simfactory ** add "Server infrastructure" component to take over ET trac but contain all server issues * custom queries on trac ticket ** new section with most common predefined custom queries *** changes in the last week *** pending review ** new section with queries useful to review tickets ** new section with queries useful before the release Jenkins: * ask Steve to check on CCT Jenkins slave * downgrade Caltech Jenkins slave Yours, Roland

Einstein Toolkit Meeting Reminder
by Frank Loeffler 07 Dec '14

07 Dec '14

Hi Please consider joining the weekly Einstein Toolkit phone call at 10 am US central time on Mondays. As usual, you can find instructions how to join on the following web site: http://einsteintoolkit.org/community/support/ In short: the number is (+1) 225-578-4942 or (+1) 866-573-0359 and the conference id is 118682#. Tickets that have been worked on (and are still open) include retiring snprintf (the Cactus version, #1712), avoiding a GRHydro build warning (#1713), and aborting early in case of errors within the CST (#1252), but the latter can probably be closed as won't fix with the split of most (all?) of the external libraries' configuration scripts into two: one to configure, and one to only build (thanks for that, Erik). Lots of smaller changes to GRHydro made the move from Zelmani to the main repository (#1152, closed, thanks to Roland), and Jenkins was not reachable, but this was fixed within minutes (#1714, closed, thanks to Barry). Besides new and otherwise mentioned tickets, we will again bring up the issue of the most convenient (and consistently working) venue for this phone call (Skype has been mentioned as not allowing US toll-free numbers from anywhere). Google Hangouts have been mentioned, but also some of their drawbacks. Also, we left the question open of how to deal with a lot of still open, and untouched bugs. We even have a ticket for that (#1698), and now would be a perfect time to do this (post-release). Another question that has been coming up was: would it be possible to have a weekly (?) full build of the ET - meaning including all external libraries that can be built on the slaves - even if system versions of external libraries are present, installed and in theory useful? This would give at least some testing for the shipped external libraries, without being too much of a burden to the slaves (hopefully). Present: Roland, Frank, Peter, Steve, Jonah, Zach, Matt, Erik, Josh Skype no longer allows calls to toll free US numbers it seems. Suggestion: can use google voice to call in. Suggestion to use Google hangouts. Updsides: better audio, video and screen sharing. Downside: max of 10 participants. Slow build of ExternalLibraries: * two patches adressing (sub-)issues ** early abort patch by Frank, can be used as quickfix ** two-stage build script by Erik that first detects settings, then builds. This needs review. Currently implemented in GSL. ** action item: go ahead with two stage procedure * related: add extra make variables at utilities build stage to simplify writing make rules for them (Roland) Goal for next release: * suggestion to add hydro analysis thorns used by Frank ** need cleanup * suggestion to get IllinoisGRMHD to ET incl. support for staggered vector potential ** needs proper solution at infrastructure level for staggering ** exampe parfile requested of the complexity level of a stable TOV * suggestion ot include random ID thorn that produces physically allowable ID for ADMBase and HydroBase. This is useful for regression tests. * remove dependency of TOVSolver on GRHydro if still present * McLachlan rewrite testing * Code to allow arbitraty number of timelevels for use by MoL and Adams-Bashforth type timesteppers Yours, Roland

SSL_DIR in simfactory option lists
by Roland Haas 26 Nov '14

26 Nov '14

Hello all, many simfactory option lists define a variable SSL_DIR however it seems as if OpenSSL only checks OPENSSL_DIR. Is there another thorn that looks for SSL_DIR? If not I'll change them all to set OPENSSL_DIR. Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. I therefore support encrypting and signing email messages. Meeting Minutes for 2014-11-24
by Roland Haas 24 Nov '14

24 Nov '14

Present: Frank, Roland, Ian, Matt, Erik Post release tickets: * #980 "Remove support for felsh base library mechanism": Ian with help * #1642 "GRHydro should not depend on ADMMacros": Roland * #1698 "The ET tickets should be tidied up": want proposal on how to proceed on wiki page, Ian has already created such an one and will update it until the next call so that we an discuss it * #1252 "Thorn configuration scripts should not be run if there are missing thorns": ** problem is related to build of ExternalLibraries takes a long to finish ** conflicts with desire to collect all errors in one place and report them once ** suggestion to have early check for missing thorns, this may be possible early on since all configuration.ccl are parsed before CST build begins ** preferred solution is have two-stage build of ExternalLibraries however we lack a volunteer with time to implement this ** Frank will look at the short term solution * #1490 "ExternalLibraries/PAPI contains testsuite, but no data": assigned to Peter * #1518 "Parameter parse and CCTK_ParameterSet interpret leading zeros in numbers differently": assigned to Steve * #1537 "Deprecate complex number functions": Roland will take care of updating the documentation and hunting down ET thorns that use the old functions * #1595 "Is *) allowed as upper boundary for a parameter range?": change the parsers to allow flexibility where unambigious ie. accept *) in place of * . Update Kranc to produce *:* instead of "*:*". Staggered vector potential operators: * current implementation is not yet ready to merge into master * would like to have branch that is ready to merge, ie a proposed solution * preference for having all vector field components in a single groups * suggestion to allow staggering to be defined per variable in Carpet and eventually in the flesh Duplicate stdout output into CCTK_Proc0.out: * hard to implement tee-like functionality in C * compromise on having extra option to also redirect stdout and stderr on rank 0 when -redirect is specified Plans for next release: * discuss next week * Frank has some thorns that he'd like to make public * AEI svn server likely going to be reinstalled, thorns accessed from ET may migrate to git and bitbucket into an "External" repository of Cactus for the non-GR related thorns Yours, Roland

New Einstein Toolkit Release (Herschel)
by Frank Loeffler 19 Nov '14

19 Nov '14

We are pleased to announce the tenth release (code name "Herschel" (Caroline)) of the Einstein Toolkit, an open, community developed software infrastructure for relativistic astrophysics. This release includes various improvements in the handling of external libraries (and with that, installations), and extensions of basis thorns (most notably HydroBase). In addition, bug fixes accumulated since the previous release in May 2014 have been included, and most of the source code repositories moved from svn (hosted by the ET directly) to git (hosted by BitBucket). For more detailed information about the "Herschel" release please read the long release announcement on the Einstein Toolkit web pages: http://einsteintoolkit.org/about/releases/ET_2014_11_announcement.php. The Einstein Toolkit is a collection of software components and tools for simulating and analyzing general relativistic astrophysical systems that builds on numerous software efforts in the numerical relativity community including CactusEinstein, the Carpet AMR infrastructure and the relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics code GRHydro. The Cactus Framework is used as the underlying computational infrastructure providing large-scale parallelization, general computational components, and a model for collaborative, portable code development. The toolkit includes modules to build complete codes for simulating black hole spacetimes as well as systems governed by relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics. The Einstein Toolkit uses a distributed software model and its different modules are developed, distributed, and supported either by the core team of Einstein Toolkit Maintainers, or by individual groups. Where modules are provided by external groups, the Einstein Toolkit Maintainers provide quality control for modules for inclusion in the toolkit and help coordinate support. The Einstein Toolkit Maintainers currently involve postdocs and faculty from six different institutions, and host weekly meetings that are open for anyone to join in. Guiding principles for the design and implementation of the toolkit include: open, community-driven software development; well thought out and stable interfaces; separation of physics software from computational science infrastructure; provision of complete working production code; training and education for a new generation of researchers. For more information about using or contributing to the Einstein Toolkit, or to join the Einstein Toolkit Consortium, please visit our web pages at http://einsteintoolkit.org. The Einstein Toolkit is primarily supported by NSF 1212401/1212426/1212433/1212460 (Einstein Toolkit), and also by 0905046/0941653 (PetaCactus) and 0710874 (LONI Grid). The Einstein Toolkit contains about 200 regression test cases. On a large portion of the tested machines, almost all of these test suites pass, using both MPI and OpenMP parallelization. The changes between this and the previous release include: === Larger changes since last release === * Repositories - Many repositories converted from Subversion to Git, including some reorganization of thorns within arrangements. - Deprecated components (still present) - ADMCoupling - ADMMacros - New components: - CUDA and OpenCL examples - PAPI - OpenBLAS - MemSpeed<li> - NaNCatcher - Moved components: - Almost all thorns except ExternalLibraries moved to Bitbucket - GRHydro and GRHydro_InitData into EinsteinEvolve - All Carpet thorns moved to Carpet arrangement (now on BitBucket) * Simfactory - Source repository moved to BitBucket - Updates to many machines * HDF5 - Enable fortran interface by default, disable C++ interface by default. * MPI - Rewrite MPI thorn configuration script to attempt to determine paths automatically using mpicxx.<br> Automatic detection should succeed on most machines (no MPI variable set in option list); if not, setting MPI_DIR to the installation directory of the desired MPI installation should in most cases suffice. * Cactus: - Plan to change output filename format from implementation::groupname to implementation__groupname. Introduced new parameter IOUtil::out_group_separator which currently defaults to '::' to maintain compatibility. The next release will change this to '__' for compatibility with Windows filesystems. * Kranc: - Kranc: Compatibility fixes for Mathematica 10 === How to upgrade from Wheeler (ET_2014_05) === To upgrade from the previous release, use GetComponents with the new thornlist to check out the new version. Switching to the new branch is not possible for most repositories due to the repository move. See the [http://einsteintoolkit.org/download Download] page on the Einstein Toolkit website for download instructions. === Remaining issues with this release === * Certain machines need to be configured specially in Simfactory because the remote directories cannot be determined automatically just from the user name. See the Machine notes below. * Recovering with Carpet: Carpet stores metadata (such as the simulation time) only for Carpet::max_timelevels time levels, although it is possible to allocate more time levels. These additional time levels then cannot be recovered; the symptom is an assertion failure during recovery. The solution is to either increase Carpet::max_timelevels, or to decrease the number of active time levels. === Machine notes === Supported (tested) machines include: - Default Debian, Suse, Fedora and MacOS installations - Bethe - Bluewaters * - Carver - Datura - Gordon - Hopper - Hydra - Loewe - Supermike II * - Nvidia * - Orca * - Philip - Shelob - Stampede (CPU) * - Trestles - Zwicky A "*" means that a small number of tests fail on that machine. Almost all tests pass on the other machines. * Stampede: defs.local.ini needs to have sourcebasedir = $WORK and basedir = $SCRATCH/simulations configured for this machine. You need to determine $WORK and $SCRATCH by logging in to the machine. All repositories participating in this release carry a branch ET_2014_11 marking this release. These release branches will be updated if severe errors are found. The "Herschel" Release Team on behalf of the Einstein Toolkit Consortium (2014-11-19)

captcha for wiki not working
by Roland Haas 19 Nov '14

19 Nov '14

Hello all, when I try to edit the wiki without first logging in, then upon clicking "Save", I am not presented by the expected Captcha but instead brought back to the edit screen and my changes were not saved. Would it be possible to check if there is something wrong with the Captcha system? Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. I therefore support encrypting and signing email messages. No Einstein Toolkit Meeting
by Frank Loeffler 17 Nov '14

17 Nov '14

Hi, There will be no Einstein Toolkit Meeting today. Everyone at LSU is not available, including me. The ET release process is coming along, if only slower than anticipated (due to unrelated projects). I hope to get most if not all things done for that today. Concerning work past the release I want everyone interested (where I automatically include all maintainers) to select one issue or bug or modification they want to see attacked/done for the next release. Open a ticket for it (if it doesn't already exitst), and champion it at the next meeting on Nov 24th. Feel free to even fix it before the release and only report about it (after the release branches have been created). If you don't have something immediate in mind, a good place to start is https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/query?status=accepted&status=assigned&stat… Frank Loeffler
