Build error
by Steven R. Brandt 26 Nov '13

26 Nov '13

I'm getting the following build error with the Chemora code base on Supermike: COMPILING /work/sbrandt/Cactus/arrangements/McLachlanCaKernel/ML_BSSN_Host/src/ML_BSSN_Host_convertFromADMBaseGamma.cc /work/sbrandt/Cactus/arrangements/McLachlanCaKernel/ML_BSSN_Host/src/ML_BSSN_Host_convertFromADMBaseGamma.cc(191): error: argument of type "__m256d" is incompatible with parameter of type "double" ptrdiff_t dir1 = Sign(beta1L); ^ Apparently it's unhappy with some of the vectorization. Any idea what should be done about it? Cheers, Steve

Binary Neutron Star evolution with Gamma-Law EOS
by Petr Tsatsin 26 Nov '13

26 Nov '13

Hello, I've recently tried to perform simulation of the binary neutron stars started from Meudon initial data. I've encountered a following problem. I can run the simulations without any problems when I use polytropic EOS. However, when I switch to Gamma-Law simulations crushed soon after start somewhere in the conversion of primitive quantities to conserved quantities. The typical log is look like this one: WARNING[L1,P28] (GRHydro): Con2Prim failed; stopping the code. New Einstein Toolkit Release
by Frank Loeffler 26 Nov '13

26 Nov '13

We are pleased to announce the eighth release (code name "Noether") of the Einstein Toolkit, an open, community developed software infrastructure for relativistic astrophysics. This release includes various improvements to the Cactus flesh, Carpet and GRHydro. In addition, bug fixes accumulated since the previous release in May 2013 have been included. For more detailed information about the "Noether" release please read the long release announcement on the Einstein Toolkit web pages: http://einsteintoolkit.org/about/releases/ET_2013_11_announcement.php. The Einstein Toolkit is a collection of software components and tools for simulating and analyzing general relativistic astrophysical systems that builds on numerous software efforts in the numerical relativity community including CactusEinstein, the Carpet AMR infrastructure and the relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics code GRHydro. The Cactus Framework is used as the underlying computational infrastructure providing large-scale parallelization, general computational components, and a model for collaborative, portable code development. The toolkit includes modules to build complete codes for simulating black hole spacetimes as well as systems governed by relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics. The Einstein Toolkit uses a distributed software model and its different modules are developed, distributed, and supported either by the core team of Einstein Toolkit Maintainers, or by individual groups. Where modules are provided by external groups, the Einstein Toolkit Maintainers provide quality control for modules for inclusion in the toolkit and help coordinate support. The Einstein Toolkit Maintainers currently involve postdocs and faculty from six different institutions, and host weekly meetings that are open for anyone to join in. Guiding principles for the design and implementation of the toolkit include: open, community-driven software development; well thought out and stable interfaces; separation of physics software from computational science infrastructure; provision of complete working production code; training and education for a new generation of researchers. For more information about using or contributing to the Einstein Toolkit, or to join the Einstein Toolkit Consortium, please visit our web pages at http://einsteintoolkit.org. The Einstein Toolkit is primarily supported by NSF 1212401/1212426/1212433/1212460 (Einstein Toolkit), and also by 0905046/0941653 (PetaCactus) and 0710874 (LONI Grid). The Einstein Toolkit contains about 200 regression test cases. On a large portion of the tested machines, almost all of these testsuites pass, using both MPI and OpenMP parallelization. Supported (tested) machines include: - Default Debian, Suse and Fedora installations - Bethe - Bluewaters - Datura - Kraken - Loewe - Lonestar - Supermike II - Nvidia - Philip - Queenbee - Stampede - Titan - Trestles - Zwicky All repositories participating in this release carry a branch ET_2013_11 marking this release. These release branches will be updated if severe errors are found. Einstein Toolkit Meeting Reminder
by Frank Loeffler 24 Nov '13

24 Nov '13

Hi Please consider joining the weekly Einstein Toolkit phone call at 10 am US central time on Mondays. As usual, you can find instructions how to join on the following web site: http://einsteintoolkit.org/community/support/ In short: the number is (+1) 225-578-4942 or (+1) 866-573-0359 and the conference id is 118682#. I expect us to talk primarily about the upcoming release, but any other topic is of course welcome, and will be discussed first. Frank Löffler

RotatingDBHIVP/E2xeon_test_rdbh on stampede
by Ian Hinder 22 Nov '13

22 Nov '13

Hi Erik, For me, the test RotatingDBHIVP/E2xeon_test_rdbh fails on stampede, but for you it passes on stampede. The optionlists seem to be the same. Can you think of a possible explanation? The results should be the same. Your results: http://git.barrywardell.net/?p=EinsteinToolkitTestResults-sandbox.git;a=blo… My results: http://git.barrywardell.net/?p=EinsteinToolkitDaturaTestResults.git;a=blob;… (the second repo is badly-named; the result is from stampede not datura) I have diffed the output log files, and there is nothing suspicious. Same number of OpenMP threads, at least for the 2 proc version. I'm wondering if the differences could come down to memory alignment differences between your executable and mine, due to different strings (dates, home directories etc) being present in the executable. See http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/run-to-run-reproducibility-of-floa…. The largest absolute difference measured is 2.92969914994501e-09. -- Ian Hinder http://numrel.aei.mpg.de/people/hinder

Test results
by Ian Hinder 22 Nov '13

22 Nov '13

Hi, Erik and I have been working on automating the tests of the ET for the upcoming release. The current status can be viewed (work in progress) here: https://build.barrywardell.net/view/EinsteinToolkitMulti/job/EinsteinToolki… This shows any failing tests as "x". You can click on the "x" to see the reason for the failure. These results are up-to-date as of now. Shall I commit them to the release-info repository (and continue to do so periodically)? -- Ian Hinder http://numrel.aei.mpg.de/people/hinder

global reductions in specified domains
by Vassilios Mewes 21 Nov '13

21 Nov '13

Hello all! Is there a way to use the global Cactus reduction functions on fractions of the entire grid? I am interested in summing grid scalars (say rho) in spherical shells in the grid. Is there a way to perform the "sum" reduction on those shells specified by a global radius variable? Or do I need to write my own MPI function that sums the contributions from all processors that have grid point that fall within the shell I am interested in? best wishes, Vassili

*no* Einstein Toolkit Meeting Reminder
by Frank Loeffler 15 Nov '13

15 Nov '13

Hi There will be *no* usual Einstein Toolkit Meeting next Monday. (Frank is at an all-day workshop at SC, Erik is at SC as well). The main topic right now is the release, and we are using either the email list and/or the IRC channel to coordinate that. The next usual Einstein Toolkit meeting will be held on Monday, November 25th. Please send emails/requests/comments to the email list until then. Frank
