Einstein Toolkit Meeting
by Frank Loeffler 13 May '12

13 May '12

Hi Please consider joining the weekly Einstein Toolkit phone call at 10 am US central time on Mondays. As usual, you can find instructions how to join on the following web site: http://einsteintoolkit.org/community/support/ I short: the number is (+1) 225-578-4942 or (+1) 866-573-0359 and the conference id is 118682#. The main topic will be the organization of the next ET release. In particular, this means we will discuss: - Release-relevant tickets (21) [1] - Schedule: - soft freeze date of May 14th (evening) - no additions (thorns ect.), major changes, new features - hard freeze date of May 21th - only 'important' bug fixes or documentation improvements ^--> to be decided by two maintainers - release date of May 28th. Not necessarily connected to the release: - Bug reports: quite a lot happened during last week: 41 issue were opened or changed and are still open, and 19 tickets could be closed. Some of them were: - Cactus now has timers for each I/O method - Some parameter expressions can now be used within parameter files, however, this makes the ordering of parameter files important (is used) - Some thorns received patches to allow different sizes for CCTK_REAL, ect. As usual, feel free to add to this agenda. Frank Loeffler [1] https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/query?status=accepted&status=assigned&stat…

Hi Erik, you missed the line above: if (abs(1.d0 - flatten)> 0.d0) then Cheers, Bruno.

Compiler warnings
by Frank Loeffler 11 May '12

11 May '12

Hi, While compiling a fresh checkout of the upcoming release I noticed (yet again) the high number of compiler warnings scrolling by. I captured them into a file and got 280k lines in 38MB this way! I parsed this and produced a graph showing how many and which warnings are produced for each thorn. Of course this is highly dependent on the compiler, it's version and flags. In this case I used numrel-gcc.cfg from simfactory. As you can see from the graph at http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~knarf/ET_stats/warnings.pdf there are a few thorns which by far dominate the picture (notice the log-x scale). These three thorns are all auto-generated. Could we do something to reduce these numbers, and possibly also a few of the others? The build log can be found here: http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~knarf/ET_stats/build.log.xz Frank Note: the color-coding in the lower plot is a _linear_ ratio, while the overall size of the bars is log-x.

Announcing pygraph
by David Radice 11 May '12

11 May '12

Dear ET users, in the past year or so Massimiliano Leoni (in CC) and I have been developing a Python/Qt 1D data visualization client called "pygraph". Pygraph is meant to be an easy-to-use and easy-to-hack drop-in replacement for ygraph, released under the GPLv3 license. Pygraph has been used for several months by many of us here at AEI and by a few other people and we believe that it is now stable enough to be publicized to the whole numrel community. Pygraph supports most of the functionalities of ygraph as well as some new features, such as: 1. native support for xgraph, Carpet 0D/1D and IOScalar ASCII file format (including proper handling of the diagonal direction); 2. native support for Carpet 1D HDF5 file format, including AMR and multi-patch data (with coordinate re-mapping); 3. automatic merging of "simfactory-style" splitted output datafiles; 4. exporting single frames in gnuplot-friendly ASCII format or all the frames in PNG; 5. working log scales and zoom stacks; 6. some basic data-editing functionalities using numpy; 7. ... :) Pygraph is available from: https://bitbucket.org/dradice/pygraph It requires my python library for importing Carpet output files: https://bitbucket.org/dradice/scidata as well as a few other libraries (see the README). Pygraph has been mainly developed and tested on Linux, but Barry wrote a tutorial, that you can find in the README.OSX file, that explains how to install pygraph on OS-X and make it work with the native OS-X widgets. In principle pygraph should also work on Windows, but this has never been tested. Please feel free to try pygraph: it is released with the hope that it will be useful and any form of criticism is welcome. Especially if it comes in the form of a unified patch or a pull request on bitbucket! Best, David & Massimiliano -- http://numrel.aei.mpg.de/people/radice

cctk_lsh and ghost points
by Petr Tsatsin 10 May '12

10 May '12

I have a very basic question about ghost points in Cactus. Is the cctk_lsh contains the size of the local grid with ghost points or not? -- Petr Tsatsin Graduate Student - Department of Physics Charles E. Do you mean save it for after the release? I am okay with doing so. Adding gridfunction output mid-subroutine?
by Scott Hawley 09 May '12

09 May '12

Is there a way to, e.g. call CarpetIOHDF5, from the middle of a subroutine -- apart from "scheduling" the output? I'm debugging a new thorn, and I want to be able to view the changes to data as they proceed through the various operations. (And it'd be nice to not have to break up my routine into a series of sub-thorns just to debug..) Thanks! Scott

[patch] HydroBase does not initialize the Lorentz factor
by David Radice 08 May '12

08 May '12

Dear ET users, currently HydroBase does not initialize the Lorentz factor. This is a problem for my code because it uses the Lorentz factor to compute the fluid four-velocity, which is needed for some other calculations. Since it makes perfect sense to use my code in situations where the fluid is not evolved, or even when there is no fluid at all, I cannot rely on GRHydro, Whisky or some other ID thorn to fill-in the Lorentz factor. It would be better, instead, if the Lorentz factor was initialized to 1 in the case where there is no fluid, but HydroBase is activated. In this way one is automatically guaranteed that the Lorentz factor is meaningful. For this reason I created the attached (trivial) patch for HydroBase that simply initializes w_lorentz to 1. Could you please consider applying this patch to the trunk version of HydroBase? Best, David -- http://numrel.aei.mpg.de/people/radice

Meeting Minutes
by Roland Haas 07 May '12

07 May '12

Present were: Frank, Roland, Barry Wardell, Erik, Ian, Steve, Bruno, Peter, Josh, Philipp, Tanja, Christian LSU server certificate: * CCT has obtained a new certificate, https should now work ET release: * still open tickets [1] * CZ4 formalism was added to McLachlan script. It generates an extra thorn since it was found to negatively impact the current BSSN performance. * Description will be added to McLachlan documentation * include three wavetoy thorns: standard cactus, McLachlan using Kranc and McLachlan using Kranc and OpenCL * the last will be commented out by default with instructions how to enable it in the thorn list. * suggestion to have syntax in thorn lists to selectively enable thorns but no working mechanism could be proposed * will deprecate old library mechanism (ie HDF5=yes) with the exception of MPI which used by many thorns without REQUIRE statements * timing: - soft freeze date of May 14th - no additions (thorns ect.), major changes, new features - hard freeze date of May 21th - only 'important' bug fixes or documentation improvements ^--> to be decided by two maintainers - release date of May 28th. * include EinsteinExact arrangement by Barry with some documentation. Bruno and Peter volunteer to look through code. * migrate test to use new arrangement where possible for the next release MHD paper: * want to use a single plotting package * supermongo disliked by those that do not have a license * matplotlib disliked by current supermongo users * provide matplotlib style files and samples * encourage new plots in matplotlib which are easier to update to common style than converting supermongo to matplotlib (or vice versa) * spend day near end of paper writing process to convert all plots to common style * most tests that should work are done (ie. Balsara tests work, Komissarow do not) * TOV test works with constraint transport, fails in long runs with divergence cleaning * magnetic rotor test works with constraint transport, the LLF flux or using +/-c for the characteristic speed for the longitudinal field component * Bruno will do some characteristic structure analysis for proper speed of longitudinal field component Yours, Roland [1] https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/query?status=accepted&status=assigned&stat… -- My email is as private as my paper mail.
