Dear All, we have opened a 3 year research position (RTDA contract) in computational astrophysics (with emphasis on gravitational wave sources) at the University of Milano-Bicocca. The deadline for applications is *December 29* . This position is funded through the new Italian National HPC Center created with the PNRR funds (EU Recovery funds). The starting date should not be later than May 2023, but it can be as early as February 2023. The position is for 3 years and it could be renewed for another 2 years (pending funding). The researcher will be hired as a full time public employee with all benefits (health insurance, pension fund, sick and maternity/paternity leave). The researcher will also have a teaching load of a minimum of 20 to a maximum of 40 hours of lectures per year (our master in astrophysics is in English). For those that did not work in Italy in the last 3 years, the net salary (i.e., after taxes) should be ~2400 EUR per month. Otherwise it should be ~1800 EUR per month. In both cases there is a one month bonus in december (i.e., one gets paid 13 months per year). The original text of the call can be found here: https://www.unimib.it/ateneo/gare-e-concorsi/2022-rtdapnrr-077-n-3-posti-ri… The application has to be submitted via this link: https://pica.cineca.it/unimib/2022-rtdapnrr-077/ The position code is 2022-RTDAPNRR-077/03 (Dipartimento di Fisica "G. Meeting minutes for December 1st 2022
by Bruno Giacomazzo 01 Dec '22

01 Dec '22

Dear All, here are the minutes from today's meeting. Sorry if I missed someone or something. Present: Bruno Giacomazzo, Steven Brandt, Roland Haas, Peter Diener, Beyhan, Artectek, Keith Dow, Zachariah Etienne, Gabriele Bozzola, Leo Rosa Werneck, Allen Wen, Yosef Zlochower Chair: Leo Minutes: Bruno *ET release recap Roland provided a recap. The delay was due to the addition of an Intel Compiler 19 workaround for GRHydro (it seems that there is a compiler bug that cannot recognize properly that arrays were initialized). In the future we also need a release co-chair because it is becoming too much work for just one person. It was a very large release with 3 new contributions and a large list of contributors with many students contributing to the testing. Steve thinks we need to better recognize the work done by the release chair since it is a lot of work. Moreover there is always some missing point in the documentation regarding how to manage a new release. Zach agrees with what Steve said. We all thank Roland for his work for this release. **missing tests in the new release Roland pointed out that Canuda does not have a testsuite. We did not notice it during the release. *Next ET release chair search The search has begun. Any volunteers? Leo is thinking about it, but he is looking for a co-chair *Open tickets: #2670 <https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2670/refinement-prolon…> (opened by Artectek): it seems to be a failure in the Carpet grid division algorithm happening after regridding, but Roland does not have an idea of what is causing this. Nobody has seen this error before. Roland pointed out that the sum of dens reported in INFO is ~1e-4 while the maximum of dens in ~1e-3, but this may be OK since the sum is the sum of the values weighted by the grid spacing (to get the integral one would need to multiply the sum by the coarsest grid spacing). Roland suggests having a look at the output for dens. Artectek says that he did have a look at the output using the script in the gallery example and the NSs are still there. Artectek's simulation is based on the BNS gallery example. Gabriele suggests starting from the gallery example and changing only one parameter at a time. Artectek said that he only changed the EOS and the grid setup for the initial separation of the NSs. Roland suggests to run with the same EOS of the gallery example (gamma law) and just change the grid setup. If this works then Gabriele suggests trying with a piecewise polytropic EOS. Roland suggests producing a checkpoint at the iteration before the error appears so that by looking at the checkpoint maybe we can understand what is happening. Gabriele also noted that the memory requirement for the run is 11 GB, which seems to be very low for a BNS. It could be that there are too few points maybe shared through too many MPI processes (and therefore each MPI may have too small grids). Gabriele and Roland therefore suggest running it on only one node as a first test. Leo also suggests checking that the NS is fully inside the finest grid (but this would probably give errors in C2P and not in regridding, since regridding is done also if the NS was fully contained). #2671 <https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2671/add-instuctions-f…>: Roland says that it would be useful to make it more clear to users which information to share when encountering problems with the Einstein Toolkit. #2665 <https://bitbucket.org/einsteintoolkit/tickets/issues/2665/two-open-pull-req…>: it was opened by Gabriele. There seems to be a couple of typos in the documentation of the TOV Solver and there was a pull request to fix it. *Call for new contribution proposals Fishbone-Moncrief gallery example Elliptica reader (and solver timeline) ticket FUKA reader announcement Roland said that Elliptica and FUKA should be included in the next release and we need to ping their authors. The Fishbone-Moncrief gallery example was done recently and it should be included. *simfactory website repo server migration Steve said it is going to be moved from svn to git. *ET Jenkins replacement status update Roland said that we used to run tests on Jenkins, but there was the idea to move to git actions. Some students worked on this and it seems to be working fine. See einsteintoolkit.github.io/tests/ (it runs on github resources that we can access for free since the einstein toolkit has an academic license and therefore we do not need to manage virtual machines by ourselves as we do now). Github action also builds documentation every day. *ET seminar and hackathon search Roland says that we should start these again. Any volunteers for seminars? What about a tutorial on NRPY Elliptic? *NRPy+ plans Zach said that Steve and Zach's group would like to get together for future plans since Steve has a very nice fork of NRPY that improves users' interaction. Zach also has his own fork with some infrastructure improvements. Steve is also looking for a student to work on NRPY (see Steve's announcement on the einstein toolkit mailing list). *EOS plans call recap postponed to next call since we ran out of time *SPECv8 update postponed to next call since we ran out of time *Unanswered questions postponed to next call since we ran out of time *tickets ready for review: postponed to next call since we ran out of time Next call (December 8): Chair: Peter Minutes: Steve Cheers, Bruno -- Prof. Bruno Giacomazzo Department of Physics University of Milano-Bicocca Piazza della Scienza 3 20126 Milano Italy email: bruno.giacomazzo(a)unimib.it phone: (+39) 02 6448 2321 web: http://www.brunogiacomazzo.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- There are only 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't ----------------------------------------------------------------------

New Einstein Toolkit Release (Kowalevski)
by Roland Haas 29 Nov '22

29 Nov '22

Release Announcement Click here to read the announcement in HTML (with hyperlinks): https://einsteintoolkit.org/about/releases/ET_2022_11_announcement.html We are pleased to announce the twenty-fifth release (code name "Sophie Kowalevski") of the Einstein Toolkit, an open-source, community developed software infrastructure for relativistic astrophysics. The major changes in this release include: * many READS / WRITES statements were corrected * there is now more robust testsuite error reporting * kuibit has improved support for modern matplotlib versions * a workaround for Intel 19+ compilers was added to GRHydro Three new arrangements and thorns have been added: * FLRW initial data solver for cosmological initial data * NRPyEllipticET hyperbolic relaxation initial data solver for vacuum spacetimes * The Canuda library of codes now supports complex and real scalar fields New capabilities for existing codes: * The SelFforce-1D code now supports gravitational perturbations using the Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli formalism In addition, bug fixes accumulated since the previous release in May 2022 have been included. The Einstein Toolkit is a collection of software components and tools for simulating and analyzing general relativistic astrophysical systems that builds on numerous software efforts in the numerical relativity community including code to compute initial data parameters, the spacetime evolution codes Baikal, lean_public, and McLachlan, analysis codes to compute horizon characteristics and gravitational waves, the Carpet AMR infrastructure, and the relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics codes GRHydro and IllinoisGRMHD. Data analysis and postprocessing is handled by the kuibit library. The Einstein Toolkit also contains a 1D self-force code. For parts of the toolkit, the Cactus Framework is used as the underlying computational infrastructure providing large-scale parallelization, general computational components, and a model for collaborative, portable code development. The Einstein Toolkit uses a distributed software model and its different modules are developed, distributed, and supported either by the core team of Einstein Toolkit Maintainers, or by individual groups. Where modules are provided by external groups, the Einstein Toolkit Maintainers provide quality control for modules for inclusion in the toolkit and help coordinate support. The Einstein Toolkit Maintainers currently involve staff and faculty from five different institutions, and host weekly meetings that are open for anyone to join. Guiding principles for the design and implementation of the toolkit include: open, community-driven software development; well thought-out and stable interfaces; separation of physics software from computational science infrastructure; provision of complete working production code; training and education for a new generation of researchers. For more information about using or contributing to the Einstein Toolkit, or to join the Einstein Toolkit Consortium, please visit our web pages at http://einsteintoolkit.org, or contact the users mailing list users(a)einsteintoolkit.org. The Einstein Toolkit is primarily supported by NSF 2004157/2004044/2004311/2004879/2003893 (Enabling fundamental research in the era of multi-messenger astrophysics). The Einstein Toolkit contains about 336 regression test cases. On a large portion of the tested machines, almost all of these tests pass, using both MPI and OpenMP parallelization. Deprecated functionality The following features are being marked as deprecated in this release and will be removed in the next release * the "REQUIRES THORNS" statement in configuration.ccl has been deprecated and will be removed in the next release. Please use "REQUIRES" and "PROVIDES" instead. * TmunuBase will no longer inherit from ADMBase and SaticConformal after this release, meaning thorns that inherit from TmunuBase will no longer automatically have access to the spacetime metric. Please explicitly inherit from ADMBase to access those variables. Contributors Among the many contributors to the Einstein Toolkit and to this release in particular, important contributions to new components were made by the following authors: * Alexandru Dima * Anuj Kankani * Cheng-Hsin Cheng * Chloe Beth Richards * Giuseppe Ficarra * Hayley Macpherson * Leonardo Werneck * Liwei Ji * Miguel Zilhao * Samuel Cupp * Taishi Ikeda How to upgrade from Riemann Release (ET_2022_05) To upgrade from the previous release, use GetComponents with the new thornlist to check out the new version. See the Download page (http://einsteintoolkit.org/download.html) on the Einstein Toolkit website for download instructions. The SelfForce-1D code uses a single git repository, thus using git pull; git checkout ET_2022_11 will update the code. To install Kuibit, do the following: pip install --user -U kuibit==1.3.6 Machine notes Supported (tested) machines include: * Default Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, and OpenSUSE installations * Expanse * Queen Bee 2 * Queen Bee 3 * Stampede 2 * Summit * SuperMUC Note for individual machines: * TACC machines: defs.local.ini needs to have `sourcebasedir = $WORK` and `basedir = $SCRATCH/simulations` configured for this machine. You need to determine $WORK and $SCRATCH by logging in to the machine. * SuperMUC-NG: defs.local.ini needs to have `sourcebasedir = $HOME` and `basedir = $SCRATCH/simulations` configured for this machine. You need to determine $HOME and $SCRATCH by logging in to the machine. All repositories participating in this release carry a branch ET_2022_11 marking this release. These release branches will be updated if severe errors are found. compiling issues with libifport.so.5, libfabric.so.1
by Tomas Andrade 21 Nov '22

21 Nov '22

Hi, I’m installing the toolkit in this machine https://www.nlhpc.cl/infraestructura/ . The documentation is in spanish but the relevant specs are: 128 nodes HPE ProLiant SL230s Gen8 each node with two CPUs Intel Xeon E5-2660 v2 OS: CentOS 7 I am able to compile using the generic.cfg file, loading the following modules GCCcore/8.2.0 GCC/8.2.0-2.31.1 icc/2019.2.187-GCC-8.2.0-2.31.1-nlhpc impi/2019.2.185 imkl/2019.2.187 Szip/2.1.1 HDF5/1.10.6 binutils/2.32 zlib/1.2.11 OpenMPI/3.1.3 hwloc/2.4.1 However, if I try to run a simulation I get errors: - error while loading shared libraries: libifport.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory - and similarly error while loading shared libraries: libfabric.so.1 After some googling, I managed to fix these errors by exporting the paths of the files libifport.so.5, libfabric.so.1 but this seems a bit strange and I am wondering if I can instead get the code to work by loading the correct modules only. Any thoughts? Thank you!
