Present were: Erik, Peter, Roland, Josh, Tanja, Ian, Eloisa, Bruno, Yosef ET fall workshop: * time: right now still Oct 22nd, however Christian Ott raised the issue that there is a grant proposal deadline near this date. Yosef says that the NSF grant deadline is Oct 31st which might not actually interfere. Will need to discuss on the mailing list. * refinemend of topics are that listed on wiki page: https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/ET_Workshop_Fall_2012 - Cosmology: Eloisa will flesh out - want/need physics project, not just computer science. Please think about this. - ELoisa asked for clarification why the elliptic solver topic was removed: removed because we are at the same stage we were at the last workshop and since it does not seem as if this is a project that requires a workshop environment but would rather benefit from a smaller group taking care of it - all: please flesh out the proposed topics - more test cases that test current physics * have virtual/in-person presentation/input from other groups working on similar topics Misc: * will keep pdf documentation in repository, no objections * want searchable online docs. Ian suggests that something like a google search box might be best, alos generated single html page version that can be searched * online docs currently not auto-generated due to lack of automated commit rights into the repository storing them Yours, Roland

Hello Peter, was the setup of initial data wrong before? What was wrong and how could the bug have manifested itself in practice? McLachlan boundary conditions
by Ian Hinder 22 Aug '12

22 Aug '12

Hi, Three months ago, I corrected a bug in the McLachlan boundary conditions. See https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/ticket/848 for more details. All bug fixes tend to be discussed on trac.einsteintoolkit.org, but we should probably announce bugs like this which people might miss otherwise on the mailing list as well. Someone has just found that an unexplained numerical blowup was fixed by applying the above patch. The bug affects the Maxwell release, but is fixed in Lovelace. Anyone still using Maxwell and McLachlan radiative boundary conditions with conformalMethod = 1 should probably apply that fix or update to Lovelace. Similarly, ML_ADMConstraints is incorrect in Maxwell, and fixed in Lovelace. -- Ian Hinder http://numrel.aei.mpg.de/people/hinder

C++ interface of HDF5
by Frank Loeffler 21 Aug '12

21 Aug '12

Hi, Currently, the HDF5 thorn within ExternalLibraries provides the C++ interface of the hdf5 library by default. However, nothing within the toolkit makes use of it. The C++ interface is considered deprecated by hdf5 itself. It doesn't work together with parallel hdf5. Thus, I suggest to not build and look for the C++ interface by default. The benefit would be that typical system installations (which don't come with the c++ interface) can be used without explicitly specifying flags in the optionlist. Also, parallel hdf5 could be used more easily. A disadvantage would be of course that it would not be available by default anymore. However, nothing within the Einstein Toolkit actually uses it. On argument so far had been that the Carpet hdf5 visit reader uses it. However, because of hdf5 version conflicts it is usually better anyway to build the reader against the headers that come with a visit installation. Cactus isn't needed here at all. Please comment on the corresponding ticket [1] if you have an opinion about this, e.g. if you use the C++ interface. If nobody speaks up the C++ interface will be dropped (by default) in about two weeks. It would still be possible to specify HDF5_ENABLE_CXX=yes in an optionlist to make sure it is present. ET workshop dates
by Roland Haas 20 Aug '12

20 Aug '12

Hello all, given that the workshop time is coming up soon and that we would (if possible) very much like to avoid having the workshop overlap deadlines that would keep people away, I would like to get everyone to state if they would be affected by this. Please note that according to the doodle poll http://doodle.com/ritukz79hhuvhben we have exclusions in both the week of Oct 15th and Nov 5th. Yours, Roland -- My email is as private as my paper mail. I therefore support encrypting and signing email messages. Get my PGP key from http://keys.gnupg.net.

ML build broken?
by Luca Baiotti 20 Aug '12

20 Aug '12

Hello, I updated my Cactus tree and compiled on my laptop (with repository simfactory osx-snow-leopard-macports-gcc.cfg) a thornlist containing McLachlan. The error is: COMPILING /Users/baiotti/Cactus/arrangements/McLachlan/ML_BSSN/src/ML_BSSN_convertFromADMBaseGamma.cc /Users/baiotti/Cactus/arrangements/McLachlan/ML_BSSN/src/ML_BSSN_convertFromADMBaseGamma.cc: In function 'void ML_BSSN_convertFromADMBaseGamma_Body(const cGH*, int, int, const double*, const double*, const double*, const int*, const int*, int, double* const __restrict__*)': /Users/baiotti/Cactus/arrangements/McLachlan/ML_BSSN/src/ML_BSSN_convertFromADMBaseGamma.cc:486:22: error: cannot convert '__m128d {aka __vector(2) double}' to 'double' for argument '1' to 'double sgn(double)' /Users/baiotti/Cactus/arrangements/McLachlan/ML_BSSN/src/ML_BSSN_convertFromADMBaseGamma.cc:488:22: error: cannot convert '__m128d {aka __vector(2) double}' to 'double' for argument '1' to 'double sgn(double)' /Users/baiotti/Cactus/arrangements/McLachlan/ML_BSSN/src/ML_BSSN_convertFromADMBaseGamma.cc:490:22: error: cannot convert '__m128d {aka __vector(2) double}' to 'double' for argument '1' to 'double sgn(double)' make[3]: *** [ML_BSSN_convertFromADMBaseGamma.cc.o] Error 1 make[2]: *** [make.checked] Error 2 make[1]: *** [/Users/baiotti/Cactus/configs/GRHydro2/lib/libthorn_ML_BSSN.a] Error 2 Do others see the same error? Einstein Toolkit Meeting
by Frank Loeffler 19 Aug '12

19 Aug '12

Hi Please consider joining the weekly Einstein Toolkit phone call at 10 am US central time on Mondays. As usual, you can find instructions how to join on the following web site: http://einsteintoolkit.org/community/support/ I short: the number is (+1) 225-578-4942 or (+1) 866-573-0359 and the conference id is 118682#. We should finalize the time for the fall workshop, for people to make their travel plans. Currently the week of Oct 22nd is proposed and nobody objected. However, exact dates aren't decided yet. That, and topic(s) to work on can be entered (by anyone) in the wiki: https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/ET_Workshop_Fall_2012 The CIGR award will come to an end this year. This is the grand that funded the toolkit for the past three years. While we got funding for another three years, a final report will need to be written. I will contact anyone I would expect to contribute in person, but it would also be nice to get input from the toolkit community. Please spare 5 minutes and think about how the toolkit helped your research. Write a couple of sentences and send them to us. If you would like to go that far you could include a list of publications that benefited from the toolkit. Also, in case you are using parts of the toolkit and are not mentioned on http://einsteintoolkit.org/about/members/ yet, please consider registering. It is not attached to any strings, it only helps the maintainers to better justify what they do. As always please speak up with any issue, question or story you have connected to your work and the toolkit. Activity last week: 30 issues changed and still open, 30 issues closed, e.g.: - GRHydro received major updates - EOS table can be readon single process and it then broadcast - added option checkpoint_every_divisor - Don't log in multiple times for sim sync - various fixes and improvements to checkpointing/restarts Frank Loeffler

Hi Did you ever tried to imagine how you could visualize the code development on the Einstein Toolkit / Cactus code base over the now more than 10 years? Take a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EO4d32ch6OI Frank Löffler
