Hi Please consider joining the weekly Einstein Toolkit phone call at 10 am US central time on Mondays. Besides any development issues that might have come up last week I would like to brainstorm about the future direction of the toolkit. This is a good time to look back because officially the original grant will end soon. In no particular order and certainly not complete, think about topics of the following kind: - If you were the single person to change something within the ET, what would it be? - Funding for the next three years will be much less than what the project had so far, thus we need to concentrate on the most important things. What do you consider most important? - Are the weekly calls your tool of choice to coordinate development? - Are the services the toolkit provides sufficient? Should something in particular be changed / improved? - Should the toolkit have 'own' user profiles (not using the CCT logins)? - Should we investigate in non-svn repos at ET.org (specifically git)? - Should the web page stay plain html, editable by every developer? Some of these questions might be fast to answer, others maybe not and you might have some of your own. This is not meant to decide anything, but to get community input on what is needed/expected/wanted and we do this deliberately at the public call so that everyone can have a voice. Of course we would like to see emails as well in case you prefer that or you cannot join the call. Last week was busy: 16 Issues have been changed and are still open but 20 have been closed, e.g.: - The default relative tolerance of testsuites has been changed from 0 to 1.e-12 - The rsync option '-C' isn't used by simfactory anymore since it excluded copying some things users did in fact want to copy. - SummationByParts got improved OpenMP parallelization for Intel Compilers (because they still cannot handle workshares as they should). - LocalInterp got some OpenMP improvements. - Cactus now better enforces that arrangement and thorn names only contain characters from a whitelist. This is necessary because these names are used inside C code. - Carpet could in some cases interpolate data from buffer regions. This was now fixed. 9 Tickets are waiting for review at the moment [1]. Please see if you can help. unnecessary rebuilds

Hello all, I am still getting occasional unexplainable rebuilds of my Cactus configuration. Eg. just now I modified GRHydro/Con2Prim and the system recompiles McLachlan. Is anyone else experiencing these? And do you have an inkling as to what could cause them? Input would be welcome (and I will look into this but need some better starting point even if is just a list of situations where a rebuild was triggered). visualizing field lines

Hello all, I tried to visualize the magnetic field lines for the rotor tests in VisIt. I can visualize it via a Bvec vector plot but when trying the field lines plot VisIt finds and error that no plot was produced. Did anyone ever manage to produce a field lines plot? I accidentally committed more changes than intended. The only other relevant change is to make Y_e_con_rhs public instead of private. Present were: Roland, Frank, Philipp, Peter, Erik, Christian, Josh, Bruno ET summer workshop: * want to offer new users workshop again * want to attach it to existing conference/workshop * Christian is hosting a summer school on astrophysics at Caltech in summer. - try to attach to this - school ends on Saturday, ET workshop Mo-Tue - apply for support for students - wait for logistics to be sorted out at Caltech (exact dates, rooms) MHD: * Bondi test now works for 5M, 900 iterations using smoothing initial data * characteristic speeds: Bruno is working on them, worked on it during the weekend * compared to constraint transport Philipp found more noise in refinement boundaries when using divergence cleaning * suggestion to use carpet::use_overlap_zones = yes which might help (Philipp will also try the TOV star with this) * refluxing: Roland looked at his commit and does not understand why this should ever have worked. Tried refluxing with a magnetic field and found that it does not conserver sum(Bcon). Refluxing with constraint transport is broken since capturing the fluxes has to be done differently for constraint transport * Philipp has manged to fix his c2p failures * Bruno will try CarpetEvolutionMask to see if this helps avoid aborts du to spurious NaN values Yours, Roland

cannot log into trac

Hello all, I do not seem to be unable to log into trac with my ET account information. I can reply to tickets and add comments as long as I do so without logging in. I tried my password with a subversion commit and that seems to work so, unless I managed to repeatedly mistype my password in trac only during the last two days, there seems to be something off with trac's authentication service. Frank #1070: EOS_Omni::poly_gamma_ini should default to poly_gamma -----------------------------------+---------------------------------------- Reporter: knarf | Owner: Type: enhancement | Status: new Priority: minor | Milestone: Component: EinsteinToolkit thorn | Version: development version Keywords: | -----------------------------------+---------------------------------------- At the moment, EOS_Omni::poly_gamma and EOS_Omni::poly_gamma_ini are two parameters for the adiabatic exponent, one used only for initial data, the other for evolutions. Both default to 2.0. This means that if someone, unaware of poly_gamma_ini, changes only poly_gamma the result is usually catastrophic (wrong results or c2p failures). I myself didn't notice today and had to debug my way down to find my mistake. I propose to make the default of EOS_Omni::poly_gamma_ini to be whatever EOS_Omni::poly_gamma is. One way to achieve that would be to use some special value for EOS_Omni::poly_gamma_ini which would usually not being used to indicate that behavior and to make that default. However, this being an exponent, at least in theory, all real values are allowed. Another approach would be to introduce a new boolean parameter which would allow users to use an initial value for gamma which is different from the one of the initial data. This would be 'saver', but has the drawback of a new parameter.
