Einstein Toolkit Meeting Reminder
by Frank Loeffler 21 Apr '13

21 Apr '13

Hi Please consider joining the weekly Einstein Toolkit phone call at 10 am US central time on Mondays. As usual, you can find instructions how to join on the following web site: http://einsteintoolkit.org/community/support/ In short: the number is (+1) 225-578-4942 or (+1) 866-573-0359 and the conference id is 118682#. In addition to anything that might be brought up at the meeting, the primary issue at the moment is to get the code ready for a new release in May, with the planned schedule shown below. At the moment this means to test, test and test. Bugs and smallish new features might still go in, but larger additions (like new thorns) are already 'out'. Concerning testing: there have been a number of recent changes to both simfactory and a number of utility thorns (external libraries ect), so it is important to check that building still works 'out of the box' on all supported machines. The old list of machines is at https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Release_Details Please update this table before the meeting. If you cannot test a machine with your name next to it, remove your name. Also, we should think early of a new name for the release. Remaining candidates from last time are also on the wiki, feel free to add some. https://docs.einsteintoolkit.org/et-docs/Release_Details - ET_2013_05 schedule - Apr 08: No new major additions to the ET until unfreeze - May 01: feature freeze of /trunk, extensive testing begins (test-suites on all relevant machines) - May 10: release branches are created trunk unfrozen again release-branch code in only-important-bugs-freeze bug-fixing primarily in release branch - May 21: complete freeze, to prepare tar-balls, add tags ect. - May 23: target release date (or earlier if all bugs are fixed) Frank Löffler

The branch: https://svn.cactuscode.org/flesh/branches/piraha_schedule Now has replaced the parameter parser as well as the schedule parser. To disable Piraha, you can do this: export USE_PIRAHA=False Please provide feedback. Cheers, Steve

I came across this in TwoPunctures. What is the meaning of "4:*:2" as a range? INT npoints_phi "Number of coefficients in the phi direction" { 4:*:2 :: "" } 16 Cheers, Steve

CarpetRegrid2 movement_threshold
by Vassilios Mewes 16 Apr '13

16 Apr '13

Hello all, i have got a question about the CarpetRegrid2 process of regridding when supplying the thorn with information from puncture tracker... in a recent simulation of BH+torus system i did, the BH was moving significantly further than the movement_threshold i supplied in the par file, but Carpet never regridded...it seems to me that the new center is set at a frequency of regrid_every, but shouldn't it be reset only when the center has moved further than the movement_threshold parameter? as it seems to me at the moment, i would have to know the movement of the BH a priori in order to chose a sensible regridding frequency, because if the BH moves too little between regrid_every, it will eventually move out of the finest refinement level.. furthermore, the regridding frequency might change during the run because the BH is actually accelerating... i am doing something wrong here or setting false parameters? best wishes, Vassili

GRHydro_LastMoLPostStep.c
by Erik Schnetter 13 Apr '13

13 Apr '13

I notice that GRHydro_LastMoLPostStep.c accesses MoL::MoL_Intermediate_Step, which is not yet defined during initial data setup. In this case, should InLastMoLPostStep be set to 0 or to 1? -erik -- Erik Schnetter <schnetter(a)cct.lsu.edu> http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/personal/eschnetter/

Present were: Erik, Yosef, Vassilios Mewes, Ian, Roland, Josh, Christian, Tanja - ET_2013_05 schedule Apr 08: No new major additions to the ET until unfreeze This means: after this phone call nothing big (like a new thorn) will be added to the Einstein Toolkit before the next release. May 01: feature freeze of /trunk, extensive testing begins (test-suites on all relevant machines) May 10: release branches are created trunk unfrozen again release-branch code in only-important-bugs-freeze bug-fixing primarily in release branch May 21: complete freeze, to prepare tar-balls, add tags ect. May 23: target release date (or earlier if all bugs are fixed) ET release: * no more major additions to the ET * slow down development and concentrate on documentation/fixes * all commits must be explicitly approved by release manager (Frank) * Frank will manage the release milestones Error reports by Vassili: * managed to fixed problem * had to switch back to vertex centered grid from cell centering ** will file bug report ** failures were present already outside of AH ** non-conservation of angular momentum when using reconstruct_Wv in cell centered grid ** will try TOV collapse in cell centered case * cure spacetime crashes by resetting to atmosphere when lapse is small (ie inside the AH) GRMHD paper: * was sent out on Monday, will be submitted to arXiv on Thursday * some of the plots will be turned into supplements in CQG and appendices on the arXiv Yours, Roland

by Philipp Moesta 08 Apr '13

08 Apr '13

Hi everyone, we have been working on a draft for the Einstein Toolkit GRMHD paper in the last few weeks. Please download the draft at http://www.tapir.caltech.edu/~pmoesta/grmhdcode.pdf We would appreciate if you could take a look and send us some comments. We plan on submitting this paper to the arxiv this Thursday, so please send in your comments before Wednesday evening PDT. Thank you in advance and best regards, Philipp Moesta for the Einstein Toolkit MHD paper authors

Milestones
by Ian Hinder 08 Apr '13

08 Apr '13

Hi all, As we are coming up to a release, it would be a good idea to run through the tickets in TRAC and decide which ones should be addressed. As we are now in "feature-freeze", this should be limited to bug fixes only. Regressions (cases where the code used to work, and has now been broken) should have much higher priority than bugs which have been around for a while. We track tickets relevant to the release using the TRAC "milestone" feature. You can see all the tickets with milestone ET_2013_05 at this link: ET_2013_05: https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/query?status=%21closed&milestone=ET_2013_0… (also linked from the trac.einsteintoolkit.org under "View all open tickets concerning the next Einstein Toolkit release") . It would be very useful for people to run through the remaining open tickets Open tickets: https://trac.einsteintoolkit.org/query?status=%21closed&group=component&col… and add the release milestone (ET_2013_05) to those defects that they think should be addressed for this release, especially regressions. Many thorns have a certain "maintainer" listed in the README file; those people could start with those thorns. Later on, this list might be whittled down by the release manager (Frank), but we should get an idea now of what might need to be done. -- Ian Hinder http://numrel.aei.mpg.de/people/hinder
